Hello,
Off to Fuerteventura (Jandia) in February half term with DCS (age 7 & 9). Does anyone have any tips at all? First time there for us.
Many thanks

Hi OP!

I recommend getting a hire car and going out and about. The fishing port at Jandia is lovely and you can get some lovely food there. Also, travel (very slowly as the road is rough or was last tome we were there) over to the west coast via Jandia to see the gorgeous and unspoilt beaches there.

Just North of Jandia is Sottovento which is famous for windsurfing and the beach is huge.

Go inland to the old capital and also over your the west coast from Sottovento to somewhere beginning with P where there is a restaurant with swimming pool.

Costa Calma is worth a wander through and most inland sites are lovely and unspoilt.

Don't bother with Costa Caleta as it's just Skegness in the sun and so is Corralejo (even more so) however the latter is approached via beautiful sand dunes which are worth seeing.

The landscape is all volcanic so rather desolate in its beauty.

Enjoy mojo and also Canarian potatoes and a lot of fish. If they ask if you want the fish with garlic bear in mind one fish comes with about 10 cloves!

I recommend the Jandia peninsula, especially the Playas de Sotavento de Jandia – breathtakingly beautiful beaches with the best swimming, sunbathing and windsurfing. Most of the Jandia area is a national park, and you'll probably have to drive as it's quite hard to get to, but it's worth it.
Also visit the dunes of Corralejo in the north of the island. Corralejo itself, a rather dismal resort, has dazzling white dunes. They are also protected as a National Park, but you can sand- and wind-board along them.
On most menus you will see mojo, a delicious spicy sauce used with everything.

There is a really good zoo called oasis park you can feed giraffes and monkeys and go on camel rides there, some small shows and a little safari train ride which goes up the hilly parts which give great views!

Walk down to the turtle sanctuary which is by the port. It’s not well advertised and looks like a bathtub dumping ground at first- but it’s amazing to see the work they do. The rehab of the loggerhead turtles is fabulous. The route along the coast to the turtle sanctuary involves walking past lots of African ground squirrels which live in the area- very cute!

There is a market in a car park near the beach in Jandia which was good for a nosy. Especially good for “genuine” branded tshirts. DS came home with a pile of them.

The beaches are gorgeous, get a small bodyboard and the children may well spend all holiday running in and out of the sea.
