New Year’s Eve traditions around the world

I’m just curious because I read that in Columbia people carry suitcases to mean a year of travel. I know about the grapes in Spain, but I also didn’t know that in Denmark people jump on chairs.

If you’re from a different country, what do you do on New Year’s Eve? Or where do you go to celebrate?

Hogmanay in Scotland and the first person across the door is a ‘firstfoot’ should come with coal, salt, shortbread and whisky and be tall and dark. They bring in the good luck.

Is it true about eating steak pie? I heard from someone in Scotland that you eat steak pie.

We went to a town in the Netherlands for new year once. They celebrated by milk can shooting. This involved mixing chemicals together in am old milk churn so they explode and also by ragging cars around the square. Oh and setting fireworks off everywhere.

OK, I don’t think I will be going to the Netherlands anytime soon for the new year… I’m guessing that was also quite loud?

So very loud @hellokittymania. It started as individual cans in the afternoon and people ended up with big chains of cans after midnight.

A lot of people eat it at Hogmanay. We have ours on as I can never stomach it at the bells.

YuletideFairy · 31/12/2019 20:26

That should have read we have ours on Ne’erday.

Every year my mum put my brother out the house at 5 to 12 so he could firstfoot us. Always had Steak Pie. Auld Lang Syne at Midnight.

stormsurfer · 31/12/2019 20:27

Yes we have steak pies in Scotland. Either on Hogmanay or New Years Day.

Likethebattle · 31/12/2019 20:41

Yes my steak pie is in the fridge for tomorrow. Steak pie is traditional.

Justmuddlingalong · 31/12/2019 20:43

Scotland. Front and back window open. To let the old year out and the new year in.

Brazilian people are very superstitious Crown Grin - there’s tons of New Year’s traditions.

People wear white to bring peace.
People wear underwear according to what they want to attract in the new year: yellow for money, red or pink for love, need to look up the others Crown Blush.
Jumping 7 waves apparently entitles you to make a wish.
Eating seven pomegranate seeds and keeping the seed inside your wallet allegedly attracts money.
Not sure if it’s a national thing, but my Nan says you shouldn’t eat birds on New Year’s Eve supper because birds scratch backwards, so it would mean you would go backwards in the new year too 🤦🏽‍♀️

Pretty much everyone has parties and there are fireworks everywhere. It helps that it’s summer and very warm.

Smurf123 · 31/12/2019 21:06

Currently in Denmark, there are fireworks going off everywhere... It's like a competition as to who can have the most... They even sell kids fireworks..
They can't have done to after the Queens speech at 6pm
They watch some old TV show called dinner for one or 90 years birthday every year before ringing in the new year and yes then they will wear funny hats and stand on chairs so they can jump off at exactly midnight... Before going outside to light off more fireworks 😂

bettybattenburg · 31/12/2019 21:08

I'd never heard of the steak pie thing until tonight when somebody posted on sm about making their nye steak pie.

Aragog · 31/12/2019 21:09

We celebrated in Spain last year. We had a flute glass filled with 12 grapes. You eat one grape on each bong of the midnight clock, one for each month of good luck.

Asterisktheknackered · 31/12/2019 21:10

Steak pie and peas in vinegar Smile

MilchandCookies · 31/12/2019 21:13

We watch Dinner for One in Germany, too! It's hilarious. We also eat doughnuts at midnight and set off fireworks.

FesteredFairy · 31/12/2019 21:16

Germany: Dinner for One shown multiple times on all regional tv stations.
Meals at home frequently featuring fondue or raclette.
Marzipan pigs or clover leaves.
Fireworks usually just after midnight.
In Austria they do Blei giessen, where bits of lead are melted then poured into cold water so they make a shape, which is supposed to have some meaning for the new year. Also they play the Blue Danube on the radio just after midnight, which is lovely.

Hellokittymania · 31/12/2019 22:10

I speak German, so I just looked up dinner for one. And I remember in Italy people wear red underwear to bring good luck…
