My new year resolution is not not be fat and 30 I turn 30 in Oct...Anyway I've bought a bike to go on bike rides to help loose weight today I did a small bike ride and wow my bum bits are so sore the bike does already have a gel seat on it. Any helpful ideas from experienced cyclists?

Make sure you have a women specific saddle, and cycle more. Your bum will get used to it after a bit - honest!

Kerning · 31/12/2019 18:34

Padded cycling shorts? Your saddle might not be the right shape/size for you either. That said if you haven't cycled for a while a sore bum is to be expected!

Padded shorts!

Padded shorts and keep doing it! Your undercarriage will toughen up. Start off with shorter rides and work your way up. Well done!

gamerchick · 31/12/2019 18:35

You need to develop your bike bum and the only way to do that sadly is to keep at it. You'll try and keep the pressure off at first and stand up when you can but it will happen.

ILikTheBred · 31/12/2019 18:35

You need Padded Cycling Shorts.

pictish · 31/12/2019 18:39

Yes, give it time. New saddles are always unwieldy and if you’re just new to cycling now, you won’t be used to sitting on it and distributing your weight efficiently.
After a couple of weeks it will feel more comfortable, I promise.

pictish · 31/12/2019 18:40

Saddles do mould to your shape you see but they need use in order todo so.

pictish · 31/12/2019 18:40

You don’t need padded cycling shorts btw. Not yet at least.

Sherloidbaisherloid · 31/12/2019 18:40

You can get a gel cushion that fits over the saddle. You will get used to it tho, I do a lot of spinning and my arse was agony at first but doesn’t get sore at all now!

CMOTDibbler · 31/12/2019 18:41

Cycling shorts, and just getting used to it I'm afraid. Don't think a more padded saddle will help - despite a womens specific saddle and good shorts I was still having problems until my local bike shop owner recommended a smaller, hard saddle which turns out to suit me perfectly

TowelStripes · 31/12/2019 18:43

Time. Its amazing how quick it'll happen, only a few rides!

Kernowgal · 31/12/2019 18:44

I had to buy a new saddle for my new bike as the factory fitted one was like concrete. Got a women’s gel saddle from Tredz and it’s so much better.

TimeForPlentyIn2020 · 31/12/2019 18:46

Narrow seat, and cycle more!

edwardson · 31/12/2019 18:47

I would suggest the specialized power saddle. Changed my life. Women's saddles are often designed by men and are just more padded, but with little thought to differences in hip/bum shape. This is a men's saddle but it has a wider seat, and it's amazing. Highly recommend - happy cycling!

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 31/12/2019 18:48

You might need a different saddle (we all have different bums!). Don't assume that the wider they are the more comfortable they are - it's just not true

MogHog · 31/12/2019 18:48

A nice gel seat does help but the more you use the bike the less you will feel it. Ive I've not used mine for a while I always know about it the next day. Few more days in regular use and It goes away

Lonecatwithkitten · 31/12/2019 18:53

Make sure your bike is correctly set up for you, correct frame size, saddle at correct height, correct Saddle and saddle at correct angle. All of this will help you maintain a better riding position and ultimately be more efficient in how you ride making it easier to put the miles in a get fitter.
I rode and found it really hard until DP ( Ex-British boys champion) tweaked my bike correcting all these things it changed how I viewed cycling.

IShitGlitter · 31/12/2019 18:54

It's a woman's mountain bike so am assuming it's a ladies seat. By the sounds of it I just need to get used to it. Is cycling good for weight loss? I know it's mainly diet am fine with that but hoping it will shift an extra few lbs?

IShitGlitter · 31/12/2019 18:55

I think my bars need to come up a touch higher if am honest am only 5.1ft so it's only a small frame too.

Go and speak to a proper bike shop (not Halfords) about saddles. Saddle comfort depends on the width of your “sit bones” rather than the size of your bum. Specialized dealers used to have “bum meters” fur measuring this! No amount of gel or padding will make a difference if it’s in the wrong place.

Shorts too. Very cheap ones are a false economy though, and unfinished seams and cheap compressible foam will do more harm than good. Decathlon mid range kit (or Aldi when they have it in) is not bad at all.

Look at Breeze for women’s only, women led bike rides.

IShitGlitter · 31/12/2019 19:01

We have a bike shop quite local will pop in later this week.

dun1urkin · 31/12/2019 19:03

Yes, get your bum bones measured!
I got numbness and pain no matter which shorts I bought, getting the bones measured and getting a saddle to fit me made an enormous difference
PS don’t make any ass-umptions (Grin) about the distance between your bum bones based on hip width either, I’m quite slim hipped but the distance between my bum bones was right at the farthest end of the scale

LizB62A · 31/12/2019 19:49

Try a few different women-specific saddles, it's all about the bones and not your bum !
And get some women's padded shorts - again, some will suit you better than others so you might need to try a few pairs.
Decathlon, Sports Direct etc. do reasonably priced ones

And, it doesn't feel like it now, but it will get less painful (I used to cycle a lot, the pain reduced but haven't done much in the last year so I know it's going to be very painful again !)

Squigglypig2 · 31/12/2019 19:51

I have a bike saddle with a hole in the middle, it made a massive difference.
