When will climate migration start?

It feels very much like the impact of climate change is ramping up much quicker than perhaps many of us imagined...

  • Obviously the huge fires in Australia right now
  • Cape Town got within days of running out of water last summer
  • Huge fires across parts of the US in last couple of years

Obviously these are impacts on Western countries, and there has been a bigger impact on developing countries but I'm working on the premise that it takes a certain amount of money to decide to 'get out'.

Do you think we'll start to see the first climate migrants soon?

People who are migrating purely because they're scared of the impact climate change is having...

If I was in Australia I would certainly be thinking of moving my family to Northern Europe / Canada as it's only going to get hotter / drier.

Even if it wouldn't help me...I'd be thinking Northern Europe or Canada would be a better bet for future generations of my family...

Thing is we need immigration in this country - we have an ageing population and a lower birth rate worldwide is desirable - there is a direct correlation between women's education and reproductive well-being and birth rate decrease after all.

However, for space programs and Earth 2.0 (borrowed from the futuris Isaac Arthur) we need a lot of people and governmental will to make it happen.

If you want to save the planet put an (orbital) ring on it!

Comment on R4 last year that Syria's issues started a few years back where global-warming/lack of water meant people moving from the land into the cities. Rural Syrians tending to be a different branch of Islam to most of those in the cities...

Ffs I would never deny climate change IS happening but saying stuff such as London will be under water within 30 years does not help anyone, it’s not true, it comes across as scaremongering and it encourages already skeptical people to really think climate change is just a big conspiracy.
