What are your experiences using breakdown cover?

Had to use breakdown cover for the first time ever yesterday and just wanted to know if our experience was the norm.

Travelling from London to Devon and we heard a loud snap from under the car. The steering was loose and the wheels were grinding and squeaking. A mechanic arrived after 4 hours, told us it was the brake pads Hmm and that they are designed to do that so you know when you change them. I pressed him many times asking if the car was safe as we had ds3 and dd5 in the car. He assured us it was, then took the keys and actually did a doughnut with the car in front of us and drove round the block like crazy to prove his point. All this with the dogs in the back.

Just before we got on the m25 the back wheel fell completely off. Called them back, waited another 3 hours then they towed us to junction 10 and told to wait for next tow truck. 4 hours later, 3am at this point, they said tow truck wasn't coming and they were getting us a hotel, jumped in a cab to hotel but no booking found. Took another hour and finally in the room by 4am.

They called us at 7:30am (today) and said a cab was coming to take us back to the car and a tow truck was on the way. No cab arrived, had to book our own. The tow truck finally arrived at the services at 11am, we were towed to Salisbury and dropped off at 2pm. The next tow truck picked us up at 3:30 and we are now finally on the road home with 2 exhausted kids, 2 dogs, a 3 wheeled car full of Christmas gifts and absolutely no money.

Is this normal? I'm seriously tempted to cancel the breakdown cover and just pay in to an emergency pot to cover any future breakdowns. I didn't know breakdown companies didn't have their own tow trucks and sub contract the work out to local companies, who only take you to the edge of their area then dump you off for the next guy!

no, of course that isn't normal. Put in a serious complaint - doing doughnuts?

modern cars are so complex and so badly designed that beyond basic wheel change or jump start there's very little that can be done at the roadside, so you would always end up with a tow.

The AA used to describe their breakdown truck service as 'relay' as you would go from one truck to the next, although I thought now the companies all do it one hop. They are all subcontractors but this sounds shocking.

I get full breakdown cover for under £60 a year on an old car so it needn't cost a fortune.

Its an old car and to be honest, we really should not have tried to drive it. The first mechanic was really awful and rude, told us that the tow truck wouldn't come as the the car was old and shouldn't have passed mot (his opinion based on 2 minutes) and that our cover was invalid due to neglect. The car just passed mot and had a full service at Halford 8 months ago.

I'm a bit angry with myself to be honest as I should have been more assertive. We were all just tired and drained after a difficult Christmas with a terminally ill relative and didn't have the energy to fight.

Tell me that wasn't with the AA.? I have been a member with them for well over 30 years and used them multiple times. They are always as prompt as they can be (that does depend on how busy they are) polite, friendly actually, and professional. As a young woman alone, with only roadside assistance, they even drove me to the nearest railway station when I was only entitled to be towed off the motorway.

Your experience is definitely not usual.

It was the RAC. That's good to hear not all are like that. I'll be switching companies for sure! 😁

Had to use the RAC the other evening. T
Driver arrived, did his job courteously and got us going. Was a simple issue

I used the RAC a few years ago. There was a bit of a wait but the RAC man who turned up was lovely and helpful and got me on my way within an hour.
