B&Q kitchens

Wanting to know if anyone has a B&Q kitchen and what you thought of the service you got?
We're moving house in January and want a new kitchen before our baby arrives in March. We had a consultation with a kitchen designer at Wren and was quoted £18k.. baring in mind our kitchen is essentially a galley kitchen and really not that big. Basically told them to shove it, after being hounded with texts and calls from them about our quote. I felt the service we got from them was amateur and pushy.
We have an appointment at B&Q tomorrow and a budget of around £6k max, pretty much know what style kitchen we want so I'm going in there and laying our cards on the table straight away.
Look forward to hearing your experiences!

We bought a b&q kitchen five years ago. Very happy with it. We fitted it ourselves.

HighOnStilts · 31/12/2019 17:50

@marblesgoing
That'll be something else I'll bare in mind then, getting someone else to actually fit the kitchen rather than the company. But you know they always give you that spiel of 'our fitters know the kitchen so we recommend you use them blah blah' lol

If you’re looking for a place that does everything, B&Q is not it. They don’t do measurements, you need to bring that in for your appointment, and they also don’t install (they’ll direct you to the British institute of kitchen and bathroom installers) - which can easily double the amount they quote you in store.

Quality varies - I am not familiar with the new range that is out now, but previously the cheaper doors were wrapped, dearer ones lacquered. Some looked very similar in the showroom but the lacquered ones were a fair bit more expensive. The designer should be able to tell you everything you need to know about the finish of doors. Units are decent enough.

@isseywith4vampirecats Oh my!!!! We're moving to Scunthorpe so technically we could make the trip to the Ponty showroom at some point, we're not a million miles away. Sounds like they are getting a good rep at the moment for being budget friendly which ultimately is what we need. We have a max of 6k to spend and that needs to include the fitting too so this might be an ideal route for us to go down

HighOnStilts · 31/12/2019 17:55

@SouthwarkSkaters oh really?? 😦 damn I will bare that in mind as well then! We have a strict budget of £6k max- all in which I will tell them first thing

Ours is Howdens. Lovely, and cheaper than IKEA...

HighOnStilts · 31/12/2019 18:01

@PotteringAlong cheaper than IKEA? Interesting 🤔
Honestly I've heard so many wonderful reviews about Howdens but that you get what you pay for in that it's good quality but expensive. Do you have a big kitchen?

We have a B&Q kitchen (got in 2016) and it’s great.

The installation was smooth and professional.

There was an issue (not their fault) and they sorted it at their expense and with great service.

Kitchen still looking good 3 years in.

isseywith4vampirecats · 31/12/2019 18:04

its worth a trip to their showroom the hardest bit is picking which units to go for we have gone through light grey to dark grey matt and gloss, knew we didn't want shaker, and when we went down there we fell in love with a pale blue gloss finish, cupboards at the bottom and drawers at the top with handles, and people had said about gloss showing fingerprints so my OH tested them and they passed the test with flying colours

MiseryChops · 31/12/2019 18:05

And they did measure it all up and install so the poster above is not telling the truth

SouthwarkSkaters · 31/12/2019 18:05

@HighOnStilts - when they did do installation, the quote would include this... maybe tell them 4K! They will try to sell you the finance Grin They normally have a kitchen sale in January but not sure this year as they’ve just changed ranges and had a sale to get rid of older stuff

SouthwarkSkaters · 31/12/2019 18:06

They stopped doing it mid 2018.

PotteringAlong · 31/12/2019 18:11

@HighOnStilts probably about 2.5 bigger than yours I reckon looking at the photos. Ours came to £9k and that included all new appliances, fitting, and the fact that we had to have to room re-plastered too.

PotteringAlong · 31/12/2019 18:11

Ikea came out at £11k

HighOnStilts · 31/12/2019 18:21

Thank you everyone so much!!!! I'm still going to give B&Q a chance tomorrow but very much swayed with looking at DIY Kitchens now, gonna spend this evening on the website to entertain myself!

OP the white kitchen in your pic is exactly what we've ordered from ikea but with solid oak work surfaces which need to made bespoke because of huge island. Our kitchen is massive. All in including fridge, dishwasher, bespoke work top, and fitting but not sink, oven, or hob it was 7k.

HighOnStilts · 31/12/2019 18:25

@BadEyeBri Wowza that is a good price!!!

I’ve just bought a b&q kitchen for a relative but it was very very cheap so I hope it will be ok.
Good kitchens I’ve had in the past have been gower rapide and I’ve currently got a very nice symphony kitchen. Both can be got from local builders merchants. Haggle and the price will come down. I got a massive reduction on my symphony kitchen but as a family we have spent quite a lot at the local builders merchants over the last decade.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 31/12/2019 18:38

Ours is B & Q, but the previous owner did the fitting as he's an engineer. It's lasted over 13 years and it looks nearly pristine.

donquixotedelamancha · 31/12/2019 19:01

Our kitchen is NOWHERE near that size so I can't imagine ours should cost anywhere near that

Our carpenter (who has fitted most major brands) had a little fit about it. He reckoned it was the best quality he'd ever fitted- went on and on about how good the legs were. The whole thing only took 3 days and one of those was making a couple of bespoke cabinets (they come ready made).

We have a strict budget of £6k max

What do you want in that? Looks like you are going for about 8-10 cabinets? Maybe £3k in the type you want from diy kitchens. Say another £800 for plinths, corners etc (I think I'm overestimating on this, to be on the safe side). £300 for an oven and hob? £200 for a dishwasher. £200 for a fridge freezer. Say £1800 for fitting with a skip to remove the rubbish. Worktops will be bugger all (£500) if you go for wood or laminate, but will add a bit if you want granite.

I think you will need to be a little careful to come in under that price, but eminently doable. Appliances, worktops and fitting are where it might go up. Fancy wirework in cabinets or big pan drawers can be expensive.

I'm sure you can haggle B and Q down to that cost all in. The plus side is that it's all in one and you don't need to source a fitter. The down side is B and Q stuff feels somewhat cheap and you are going with the appliances they have.

As you say, it would be a little more work to get the fancier kitchen at the same price. I'm a bit of a control freak, because ours will be there for years- each to their own.

HighOnStilts · 31/12/2019 19:09

@donquixotedelamancha Why do I already have a feeling that B&Q will probably be well out of our price range for what we want 🙈 oh well, I guess it's still worth a consultation just to see what they can offer us!

I've been looking at appliances on Amazon, i.e faucet, sink, built in oven, hob, hood and my current wishlist is coming in well under a grand! That would leave over 4k for the units and any decor that needs doing. We don't want a dishwasher (I'm the dishwasher 🤣) and dont need integrated washing machine or fridgefreezer (will use our exsisting free standing one)

donquixotedelamancha · 31/12/2019 19:16

We don't want a dishwasher (I'm the dishwasher 🤣)

Are you quite mad? Buy a dishwasher :-)

In 5 min I knocked up a basic 3x4m white gloss galley kitchen on the diy kitchens planner. £3.2K without appliances. Have a play:

HighOnStilts · 31/12/2019 19:18

Dishwashers seem like too much of a farce if you ask me, I'm quite happy with my sink and fairy liquid 😅

Ahhhh thank you! Going to have a play with that on my laptop shortly 😊

We have a bandq kitchen. 7 years on there are no problems whatsoever. They designed it but we had an independent fitter/plumber/electrician chap to keep costs down. Further kept costs down by being around and building all the units for when he needed them. Cost about 7k in all but we needed complete rewiring of two rooms and full plumbing, plastering etc as well.

strawberry2017 · 31/12/2019 19:33

Look at AO.com I got some good prices for appliances on there.
Would highly recommend a dishwasher if you can fit it in, I didn't have one in my last kitchen, moved house and there was one here and I wouldn't be without now! Especially with a 2 year old and a baby on the way! One less chore to worry about x
