Does anyone know how tight fitting Brownie leggings are?

Bizarre question I know! My dd is about to start Brownies. She has ASD and will only wear leggings. For Rainbows we bought her red leggings and uniform tops. Brown leggings are much harder to come by!

She will only wear 'proper' leggings that are completely fitted (it's a sensory thing) and not soft jersey trousers.

It's not easy for me to get to a shop with uniform, can anyone tell me what the Brownie leggings are like?

The ones we have are official brownie ones. They are properly tightly fitted leggings but totally straight so are loose at the bottom. Try sizing down as they are quite big too.

SisterSistine · 30/12/2019 22:12

They are fitted to the knee, but they are more flared around the legs than regular leggings. My daughter has big sensory issues around clothes but copes fine with them. But if she likes tight all the way down she might not be happy.

ClownsandCowboys · 30/12/2019 22:12

Thank you! I'll size down and we'll see if she will accept them.

Your daughter does not have to wear the uniform at all. I say this as a rainbow leader. My daughters wear the t shirts and their own trousers.

katcatkat · 30/12/2019 22:16

You can get brown leggings on ebay but many brownie groups will accept any dark coloured bottoms. My experience is the brownie ones are really strangely sized!

SisterSistine · 30/12/2019 22:16

There is a website called LoveLeggings that sell brown leggings for kids. If she doesnt like the Brownie ones they might work? No idea what the qualify is like.

MsAwesomeDragon · 30/12/2019 22:16

They aren't really leggings, more soft trousers. They are wide too, so a slim child can't wear them.

Talk to brown owl, I am sure she will be accommodating and allow your dd to wear black leggings. I am snowy owl and at my Brownies about half of them wear the official trousers and the other half wear something else. We're happy if they wear a uniform top, but I know some other units are stricter. A girl with sensory issues should be allowed to wear other leggings as it's a reasonable adjustment for her disability.

ClownsandCowboys · 30/12/2019 22:18

I'm sure they will let her wear black, but she hates being seen as different. She wants to be the same as others. Hopefully other girls will wear different trousers.

She's so excited, she doesn't manage much extra-curricular, but she loved Rainbows and they were wonderful at accommodating her. She really flourished there.

There are Brownie Leggings and Trousers. The trousers are more cargo sort of style.
The leggings are not hugely tight fitting for being leggings tbh. However all the uniform range is known to shrink a little in the wash.

Also neither are a requirement , and I can bet the other girls probably only wear the polo and hoodie.

MajesticWhine · 30/12/2019 22:28

Brownie leggings are definitely not fitted. You might be better with some unbranded brown leggings.

AllTheProsecco · 30/12/2019 22:30

We have some brown leggings from Tesco if that is any help. Not recent but they are out there!!

MsAwesomeDragon · 30/12/2019 22:30

Have you been for a visit yet? If you go for a trial week (some units do this, others you just join straight away) this is something you can observe. If you don't, this is something one of the leaders will be happy to answer questions about. Like I said, loads of my brownies just wear the t shirt and hoody as their uniform. The trousers and leggings are not a requirement, they are an option.

CooCooCoo · 30/12/2019 22:35

Also a leader can’t insist she wears the branded trousers/leggings either, so tbh I would recommend she wears what she is comfortable with.

Also you can send the branded ones back if you figure they aren’t what she needs .

(Also don’t buy from John Lewis etc as profits don’t go back into guiding!)

TooStressyTooMessy · 30/12/2019 22:36

I agree with the others about how the Brownie leggings fit. It would be worth having a word with one of the leaders definitely. As a PP said you might find the other girls don’t wear them anyway, or at least you will be able to find out for sure.

Loads of the girls in Brownies here just wear black leggings.

Mulledwineinajug · 30/12/2019 23:19

My dd wears any leggings with the brownie top.

Dictionariesandpictionaries · 30/12/2019 23:28

The leggings are really loose around the bottom, more like soft trousers with a weird tight bit at the top, sorry. Odd design. Also agree getting a size down.

ClownsandCowboys · 30/12/2019 23:32

Thanks. I know they can't/won't insist on her wearing them, it's more how she feels in comparison to the other girls. She's a stickler for rules and it takes a lot to convince her that they are flexible.

I know she won't need it straight away, but it's something she's asking about, which means it's part of her anxiety and I don't want her worrying about it.

I'll wait and see what the other girls wear.

I’m sure the Leader would - in the circs - be happy to talk to her about it being ok for her to wear something different if she’s anxious about Rules: I’d absolutely do that for a new Brownie starting with me.

I hope your DD has a fab time at Brownies Smile

thaegumathteth · 30/12/2019 23:51

I'd wait and see what the rest wear. None of the girls at dd's brownies wear the leggings even though they had the rainbow ones.

IdblowJonSnow · 30/12/2019 23:58

They are loose on my dd. The original ones ordered online were absolutely massive and fell down and were too long. Had to send back and reorder.

Elieza · 31/12/2019 00:04

You could get the brownie leggings and just use a needle and thread or a friend’s sewing machine to run up a seam the inside leg to make them tighter. Easily done providing enough stretch in the leggings. You don’t have to tell her if it would upset her. You would have to see carefully to avoid lumps/discomfort as she is sensitive.

Would long socks underneath brownie leggings help? They would still give the feeling of tight lower leg coverage to the knee and the leggings thighs will be tight enough if I’ve read what others are posting correctly. Below the knee it won’t feel like the leggings are baggy as the right knee length soft socks will give the sensory input she likes?
