Anyone who is over 75 and not in receipt of pension credit has to pay for a TV licence from 31/05/2020.
Mum received her letter today. She wouldn't mind paying for her licence if it was value for money. All that has been shown over the Christmas period
were repeats.
And all the presenters are paid a fortune.

If she doesnt want bbc and doesnt watch it then she shouldn't bother buying a license.

I dont have a tv license, I dont watch bbc or any live TV, I have only got netflix and the internet. TV licensing are happy with this and welcome to inspect anytime they like.

I agree it should be a subscription service, why force people to opt out? No one is made to opt out of Netflix or Sky. BBC should be the same. They will probably have to change if people continue to cancel their licenses.

ginghambox · 30/12/2019 23:44

No, actually, first they came for the disabled, the younger poor people, the working poor, the mentally ill, the sick, the NHS and no one has done a mother fucking thing about that so really not interested in subsidising a subgroup of people who can afford it better than most. It's a fucking TV, not food or heating or medication.

Get a fucking grip the Brussels Broadcasting Corporation is about as left wing as you can get.

Selene28 · 30/12/2019 23:45

Do people still pay for the TV licence? I haven't paid for 10+ years and I still watch TV

TantricTwist · 30/12/2019 23:53

Why can't the BBC just advertise then we wouldn't have to pay a fee other than to opt out of watching adverts.

BonnesVacances · 31/12/2019 08:52

I think students deserve a free licence more.

Agree with this. Why do students who have little to no income and who are still dependent on their parents' contribution have to pay for a licence to watch TV in their bedroom? It's madness!

Zampa · 31/12/2019 09:15

Free TV licences were previously funded by the DWP not the BBC. The decision (afaik) is not one taken by the Corporation but by government.

There's been so much anti-BBC propaganda out there recently that the responses on this thread don't suprise me.

I think £154.50 a year for the BBC is amazing value. I get football coverage and analysis without the need for 3 subscriptions to Sky, Prime and BT; superb drama like His Dark Materials and Giri/Haji; trashy nonsense like Strictly and I couldn't survive without CBeebies (with no targeted advertising).

All for less than 43p a day.

So tour thread has nothing to do with the over 75 element as per the thread title and your actually just slating the BBC?

Davros · 31/12/2019 09:27

Gordon Brown made the change from funding over 75s TV licences and put the cost into the BBC. There was a thorough consultation and to continue the funding could have meant the loss of a channel or other drastic measures. Let over 75s pay if they want to use it

Ginfordinner · 31/12/2019 09:32

Unlike most mumsnetters I do feel the the TV licence is value for money. If we make it subscription only we would only get programmes aimed at the lowest common denominator.

I don't see the political bias. Some say it is too right wing and some say too left wing. I find politics very dull so I never watch anything political.

I watch the BBC and listen to BBC radio. I also use their website.

We don't have Netflix or Sky as we don't feel the need for it.

Tantric has a good suggestion, but it may affect what programmes the BBC commission if not enough people subscribe.

Selene28 if you are watching live, recorded or catch up terrestrial TV you need a licence.

If you only watch Netflix, Sky etch then you don't.

RedRosie · 31/12/2019 10:28

(It's like he knew this was coming ...)

Isbii · 31/12/2019 11:53

You don't need it for catch up services like my5 etc only for BBC I player.

Ginfordinner · 31/12/2019 12:49

You are correct Isbii.
I thought it applied to all catch up TV Blush
