Bloody hell. Dd locked me out of the house and had to call the fire brigade.

Dd is almost 3. I was in the back garden grabbing the washing and dd locked the door (we have a thumb turn on the inside.)

Front door was chained, I live in a terrace with 3 gardens between me and the alley and there’s a locked metal gate on the entrance. Neighbours not answering my knocks.

Lovely, lovely fire brigade came out (4 minutes from when I called!) and took the alley gate down and cut the chain for me so I could get back in.

Just about recovered now but bloody hell!!!!!! Thankfully I have a cat flap so dd was fetching me random things from the sitting room to pass the time. How on EARTH did I let that happen though. Massive parenting fail on my part. Christ.

You would be surprised how common incidents like this are, OP. As you can see from PPs! Don't feel bad. No harm done.

One of my best friends got locked in his downstairs loo when the lock broke and it took 6 hours before he managed to kick the tiny window out and clamber through it into the front hedge. I think we all have a bonkers story about us or our kids getting locked somewhere!

Aveisenim · 31/12/2019 13:35

My DC did this when they were two, ended up calling the police and had to change the lock on the front door... facepalm little one was happy as larry watching TV and munching on snacks! We didn't have such a quick response time!

Its worse when they can operate locks Grin

When I was about 4 my grandma wouldn't take me to the playground because she was cooking so I snuck out and took myself!

@tappitytaptap Very smelly nappies, but it was mostly coming out through her skin. We told nursery, but someone forgot to note it, and on the second day they shampooed the carpets.Blush

From the opposite perspective: -
My mum locked me in once. I was about 13 or 14. She went out and deadlocked the Yale lock as she went. Can't open it from the inside if you do that.
Our back door was old and crappy and had swollen up and was jammed tight and unopenable.
I'd arranged to meet a friend and I was stuck on the house. Thankfully my friend decided to walk up to meet me as it was very unusual for me to be a no show. I had to post my keys out through the letter box so she could open the door.
I did complain to my mum later. She just went on about being on automatic pilot and seemed entirely unconcerned about what I was supposed to do if there was an emergency.

I think everyone has had to talk their kids out of a locked house at one time or another, OP.

DS2 (then aged 3) couldn't open his bedroom door when he was staying at MIL's and called the police Blush

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 31/12/2019 18:57

Toddler DD shut herself in the sitting room and rucked up the ancient carpet so I couldn’t open the door. I ended up clambering onto the kitchen counter, squeeeeeeezing myself through the serving hatch (retro!) between the kitchen and sitting room and dismounting inelegantly onto the wobbly coffee table. DD was oblivious throughout.

Been there. I locked DD in the car when she was about 2 (as well as my phone etc)

Some kind soul loaned me their phone to call the AA who unfortunately couldn’t get into the car. The phone owner called the fire brigade who managed to reach the key fob by forcing the door a smidge.

Seeing all the commotion a passing police car came by and kindly offered to go to my mums for spare house keys to get to the spare car key. (My newly retired father had “helpfully” tidied everything and my keys couldn’t be found)

All in it took about 3 hours and I was mortified. I took a thank you card and tray of donuts to the fire station.

DD sept through the whole thing, including the car alarm going off every 5 minutes Grin

I locked my children and the au pair in the house today.

Au pair texted yesterday to tell me she'd forgotten her key, it was at her father's in Spain. No worries, I said, we have a spare key.

Which we do.

In the key safe on the outside of the house.

I forgot this totally when we left for work this morning.

At 1030 au pair text to ask where the key was.

I had to talk her through finding the windowlock key, and then she had to climb out the living room window to retrieve the door keys from outside. Absolutely failed today.
