Is this normal? Brain MRI

I had a brain MRI scan today and when I asked the technician if everything was ok she just said that was a question only my Doctor could answer. I’ve had scans before where they’ve told me that although they couldn’t say for certain everything looked fine. So now I’m worrying that it means they saw something bad on the scan?

I’ve had them say that and so has my friend. Both were fine. Neither were scans of the brain but I imagine the same thing applies, which is presumably that the staff make a point if not telling anyone anything in certain departments and leave it up to the doc to tell them. I can see their point. Way less hassle to say nothing!

Thank you. It’s just I’m over analysing everything they said, like telling me I would be seen in Neurology clinic in a few weeks when as far as I was aware my GP referred me and the results would be going back to my GP. I’ve spent all of Christmas convinced I’ve got a brain tumour and now I’m just over analysing everything.

When DS has his brain MRI we had to wait several weeks for the results - they wouldn’t tell us anything there are and then. I think that is quite common when dealing with an area as complex as the brain as it’s hard to tell from a glance what’s going on.

technically, the mri technician will not be "allowed" to tell you the result or give you any indication. Sometimes you may get someone who will let that waiver a bit - perhaps a more experienced technician - but neither neccessarily means anything of any significance. Hope thengs all go OK for you.

MyNewBearTotoro that makes sense. What was your sons results in the end? If you don’t mind me asking.

Definitely normal.
People that do get told by the radiologist are in the minority despite what you often read on MN because they’re not actually allowed to tell a patient.

Hope everything is ok and that you get good news when you get your results Flowers

If it is any comfort when my daughter had a brain MRI which showed a mass it was clear mid scan that something was up as they gave contrast which wasn’t planned. We got a phone call that night with results.
For subsequent scans where there hasn’t been anything unexpected we have always had to wait for clinic appointments for results. So - although you need to wait for results - no news so far is probably good news.
Take care Flowers

Both my ds mri of brain and his mri of spine I was told they couldn't tell me anything and his neurologist would tell me the results.

They were all clear.

Told same with eeg. That was clear.

Eventually he had various genetic tests and the last one came back with a gene variant and is now on a trial.

It's so hard not knowing - I get that. But not being told isn't any indication of the result.

Obviously with blood tests/ genetic testing I couldn't even ask that question - and that was the one where something was wrong Grin
