How did your a-level student improve (2nd) language skills?

I think she's a little too old for an exchange plus that seems an unproductive period of time (has worked the past three summers and would want/have to work this summer to earn and to keep up her cv).
She will be 18 in August but any jobs (au pair, etc) abroad are for over 18's.

I can't think what else she might do. I believe that total immersion is a great way to learn a language but how can she do this when she kind of falls between two stools?

I'm hoping I'm being a bit thick about this and there are obvious solutions out there..

I think it's a lot easier now than it was back in my day, what with Youtube / cable channels / podcasts and what have you.

What language is she doing? I speak quite a few. Are there any language groups near you that she could attend? Some places do events and things, I know in London there is a Servantis theater that do programs in Spanish.

YouTube is a great resource. There’s plenty on there. She could find subjects that interest her, or even blogs by other teenagers to watch.

Maybe she could also join one of the polyglot groups on Facebook and find somebody who likes the language that she’s learning. Or find another teenager who is learning English, and they could do a language exchange just by talking. Full immersion is great, but there are so many resources around these days and the Internet definitely helps, if you use it correctly. Amazon also has quite a lot of choice with books in French, Spanish, German etc. Also look for apps where you can play games, word searches etc.

Netflix also has different language options, so you can watch your favorite TV show is in a different language.
