GLASGOW MUMSNETTERS- can you help me with where to eat?

Meeting up with a old school friend for dinner in Glasgow city centre next week. We will both have our older children (plus her primary school age ds) with us and are also wanting to have a few drinks while there. Can anyone recommend somewhere for us to eat... reasonable prices but great food? Every city has those hidden gems that only the locals seem to know about 😁 I'm staying at citizen M and dh is planning on walking us there then picking us up after he's been to his boring hobby thing so preferably within walking distance of the hotel. Thank you!

You'll be spoiled for choice in the city centre. Any preference for type of cuisine - Chinese, Indian, French, Italian, British, Scottish, American, Mexican?

Have a look at 5pm.co.uk, which helps with reviews and lets you book online (also Tripadvisor). Most places offer set menus so you can control costs.

We love Topolabamba which is Mexican tapas. Good for all ages and lovely food.

It's not fancy but the kids might enjoy Stack and Still. It's a pancake place right in the centre, with some ridiculous number of sweet and/or savoury toppings.

Halloumi is nice for Greek food and very central as well, Elia on George Square does good home cooking style Greek food for a reasonable price too.

Darcy's in Princes Square is always good with kids of all ages and the cocktails are always enjoyable, there's something for everyone there food-wise as well.

Might need a rough sort of budget idea and maybe also type of food/ venue. But..

You are fairly close to The Raven, which has loads of great beers and the food is like BBQ/ southern style (ribs, good burgers, mac n cheese etc). Very casual and reasonably priced. Along this same line (ish) is the Shilling Brewing Co.

Mozza is decent for pizza and closer to you then Paesano in the Merchant City (where you always need to queue outside for a table).

Stereo is chilled, hipsterish vegan place that I like. Down near central station.

Vroni’s is good for a glass of wine and charcuterie boards and things like that. Not sure about it for the younger DS.

I’m assuming these casual type of places are going to be better than proper restaurants (which I can also recommend though - just let me know).

Sorry forgot to add it would be more British "pub grub" type off food due to fussy teens. Somewhere with a good menu selection I.e some sea food, curry, burgers etc but not any of the chain places like frankie and bennys or Cosmo etc

Second Halloumi! I nearly wrote it but thought I’d rambled enough Grin

RJnomore1 · 29/12/2019 16:45

I’d recommend The Raven then. Or for Italian, la vita ok the corner of george square.

NY Grill in princes square is quite good too for burgers etc. And Absurd Burd in Nelson Mandela place for chicken and waffles although it is a small chain - leeds Manchester Etc.

betternamechangeforthisone · 29/12/2019 16:46

The Griffin?

PARunnerGirl · 29/12/2019 16:47

Maybe some of the places on and around Bath St might be good for you then. Plenty of bars with menus like this (e.g. The Howlin Wolf, Butterfly and Pig).

Almostfifty · 29/12/2019 17:00

Adlib's good, has burgers and stuff, but the specials are a bit more exciting.

BlueThursday · 29/12/2019 18:05

For me you can’t beat La Vita. They have a traditional Italian on George Square and a tapas place on Gordon Street

AHorseCalledCroc · 29/12/2019 18:17

Ad-lib's southern fried chicken burger was always popular on a work lunch!

NY Grill in princess square does good chicken and waffles according to DH and I liked the cocktails Grin

Used to love L.A. vita but it changed a few things and now not a fan. Di maggios or pulcinella are better now.

Likethebattle · 29/12/2019 19:30

Slouch on bar street does great burgers.

Likethebattle · 29/12/2019 19:31

*bath street

Likethebattle · 29/12/2019 19:32

Have a look at bunker on bath street too.

feelingchange · 29/12/2019 19:58

I'm a fan of steak, cattle, roll in the merchant city and I think there is one at sauchiehall street. Its mainly burgers.

BoyfriendCoatBigScarf · 29/12/2019 20:05

I was in Bunker before Christmas and was pleasantly surprised with the food.

I like Il Pavone and Darcy's in Princes Square. There's a Zizzi there too.

Tony Macaroni is also a great chain for taking kids too. It's underneath Jury's IIRC.
