How to move a one month old into a crib?

RigidBoard · 29/12/2019 08:54

My baby is currently in a Moses basket with a cellular blanket.

I want him to sleep in a crib as it is easier for me and he needs to move up to it anyway. I have got him a gro-snug to sleep in but he will not settle in the crib at night (he can nap in there during the day). Does anyone have any tips please?

Try making it smaller?

Take a big bath towel roll it into a sausage and make a U shape with it like a nest. Put a sheet over the top and make the cot up. Place baby in the snugger u shape.

RigidBoard · 29/12/2019 09:00

Is that allowed? Does it increase the SIDS risk? Sorry to sound stupid but he is my PFB Smile

Personally I wouldn't make a nest with a rolled up towel under the sheet; you'd essentially be making a sleepyhead, which are known to be unsafe and no longer sold by lots of retailers.

Try putting the Moses basket into the crib for a while. Baby should be able to see the crib bars etc and can get used to being lifted in/out yet still have the familiar surface/sides/size of the Moses basket.

Yes it does increase risk of SIDS, please don’t do this. Nothing should be around your baby’s head when sleeping in a crib/cot/Moses basket, inc sleepyheads.
It’ll just take a while for them to get used to it unfortunately, he will get there. A month is such a short time when you’ve spent 40 weeks cosy inside mum, they just need time.
Sorry that’s not very helpful but sadly true

We used the carrycot that came with our travel system as it was safe for regular sleeping (not all of them are) and put it in the cot at night. Don't do the rolled up towel thing!

sirmione16 · 29/12/2019 09:18

The moses will feel safer for him. You could try swaddling him if you really want to move him in. But he's still so little!

User12879923378 · 29/12/2019 09:18

You could also try swaddling or gro swaddles, although I would ask the health visitor to show you how to swaddle if you are using muslin as you need to do it safely. Basically they don't take well to larger spaces until they lose their startle reflex which I think happens at around 3 months, and swaddling helps v with that.

MsChatterbox · 29/12/2019 09:19

As suggested by pp I had the moses basket in the cot. My son never seemed to noticed when I took out the moses basket.

RigidBoard · 29/12/2019 11:44

I'll attempt that then and put the Moses basket in the crib. I'm happy to keep trying I just don't want him unsettled and upset

Do not do the towel thing. Christ...

Mosey basket into the cot for afew weeks, He will get use to the environment / smell etc

Good luck

Horsemad · 29/12/2019 11:50

I swaddled mine, worked well.

Atalune · 29/12/2019 16:27

I don’t think I’ve explained the towel one very well, but my kids are also older so I expect advice has moved on some.

Sorry for the bad advice. Ignore me!

RainbowSlide · 29/12/2019 17:25

The u shaped towel is what the nurses did for dd in the children's ward when she was 3 days old and they were putting her in a cot, so not sure it's that outdated as dd is only 4.5?

My advice though is to swaddle. They love it. Do it tightly and safely (or buy the velcro ones) and it'll be your answer.

MyLordWizardKing · 29/12/2019 17:30

I put my daughter (firstborn) in the Moses basket in the cot, as others have suggested.
Moved my son to the cot at one month without anything to ease the transition - he had outgrown the Moses basket already! He didn't seem to care but all babies are different.

RigidBoard · 29/12/2019 19:23

I'm going to try the spare room as it is less draughty in there and see if that makes a difference to him. He has a gro snug sleep bag but he self soothes with his arms to his face so I don't think he'll like being swaddled.

Do you mean a cot, with bars? A tiny baby looks lost in a normal cot. I thought a “crib “in the uk was used for any small basket or cradle and in US means a cot.

RigidBoard · 29/12/2019 21:03

@hovverry it is a crib. So a tiny cot essentially. He has a cot bed too but this is for when he is bigger and can sit up. The crib I would like to use now instead of the Moses basket.

PorpentinaScamander · 29/12/2019 21:06

Isnt a crib the same size as a moses basket? More or less. I'm trying to picture the never used moses basket we had and the crib from when mine were babies. I'm sure they were a very similar size.

Sorry no advice. Mine went in the crib from day 1 so didn't need to 'change over' until they went into the cot.

codenameduchess · 29/12/2019 21:32

The towel thing isn't anywhere near baby's head so how does it increase SIDS risk? My DS had this in scbu just 5 weeks ago, and I was told to do it at home too if he needed it...

CustomerCervixDepartment · 29/12/2019 22:32

He needs to be in the same room as you till at least 6 months, they use the sound of your breathing to regulate their own.

Fairydust00999 · 29/12/2019 22:38

The only way I managed it was swaddling with a blanket.
Not tightly, but just making sure he was cosy.

But mostly, I just enjoyed the cuddles.
Hes 15 months now and still naps on me 🙈 first baby though so easy to do!

RainbowSlide · 30/12/2019 01:31

Codenameduchess you put them in with it as a U shape, right? Not around their head- maybe that's what people are thinking?

HappyAsASandboy · 30/12/2019 07:15

@RainbowSlide yes, I was picturing it being a u shape around their head and down the sides. Like a sleepyhead nest would be.

codenameduchess · 30/12/2019 08:28

Yes @RainbowSlide and @HappyAsASandboy the U shape goes under the bum so nowhere near the head. Babymoov do a positioner thing the same with a U shape cushion that velcros down under the bum.

HappyAsASandboy · 30/12/2019 09:19

@codenameduchess that sounds safer!
