Shit. Haircut.

Context - DP has cut my hair for me for years. Never had a problem.

He did it today, because there were a few ratty bits at the ends, so I asked him to cut it to just below shoulder length, so about 2 and a half inches off from the last time.

I've just got up and checked in the mirror. It's blunt cut to just below my chin, not even collar length. If I blow dry it, it's in danger of barely passing my ears, so no more bouncy curls, which is how I've done it for since I've known him. It's too short to tie back. It's too short to put up. All it's missing is clipping the back to become an internet meme.

He's cut off about 6 inches of hair.

I'm trying to not lose my shit at him. but most people know where the fucking shoulders are compared to the back of the head. He usually knows where the shoulders are compared to the back of the fucking head.

I'm going to have to sob quietly where he can't hear me, aren't I?

How long exactly does hair take to grow back?

Oh I'm so sorry, I to have curly hair so know exactly what you mean about once your hair has been styled. I know you said he's cut your hair for years but Is your husband a hairdresser? I can't imagine allowing my husband to go anywhere near my hair with a pair of scissors. However, it's done now and can't be reversed, can you style it straight for a couple of months, it'll grow soon enough I'm sure.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 28/12/2019 21:34

Well - they do say you get what you pay for. Unless he's a qualified hairdresser, I'm not sure why you'd let him anywhere near your hair. But it'll grow back - mine takes about three months to grow a couple of inches, I think.

He's not actually a hairdresser, but he's always been good at it - when we could afford for me to get it cut/coloured professionally in between his cuts, the hairdresser would always remark on how well it had been done. It's completely even and is in all probability a good haircut. But it's not mine and not what I'd asked for and not what he'd repeated word for word.

It's naturally wavy, too (I'd roughly dried it straight for the cut), so it's going to get even shorter (and wavier with the reduced weight and being very fine) in normal circumstances.

I'm saying it all here because I can't say a fucking word to him.

(sob)

Bless you not wanting to hurt his feelings by saying anything. Count your blessings its a decent cut firstly. And secondly, if its shorter than you've had it in ages then it's probably a bit of shock factor, sleep on it a couple nights and let it sink in, you'll just need to get used to it. It probably frames your face more at that length, too :) at the very least, get a nice bobble hat for a month or so. (kidding!)

I agree it probably is a bit of shock factor. After you've washed and styled it and had a day or two to get over the shock, it probably will look a lot better. I cut my own hair and have got pretty good (even if I do say so myself), since watching YouTube videos. I imagine curly hair is a bit more forgiving than my poker straight hair is. If I mess up and go a bit wonky, it's usually quite obvious!

The best tip I got from YouTube (I don't know how it would work on curly) was to put my hair in pigtails. Snip, snip and then a bit of thinning out the ends. It was so easy, and easy to judge the length too! Maybe you or your dp could give it a try next time.
