Anyone using noom?

Just that really? I quite fancy it but can't decide if it's worth it or not? Anyone used it?

I have tried to find more about it but can’t understand what exactly is what they do. Sometimes it looks is a diet and other times some kind of coaching.

Have been bombarded with adds for ages, still wondering if it is better to go for the pair of shoes...

surlycurly · 28/12/2019 20:37

Ha! I do love shoes... I don't have a lot of disposable income so I'd like some actual reviews rather than online hype!

I've signed up for the 14 day trial. It seems ok so far, but not sure it's worth £99 every three months (or 4?) . If you cancel they offered me it for £16 or something a month, so worth bearing in mind ...

JustMyName · 28/12/2019 20:42

I've also noticed that on their Facebook page there are only positive reviews and they're all written in perfect English ... who writes like that on Facebook?? Also it shows lot of comments, but I can't see them, leading me to believe they remove negative comments.

surlycurly · 28/12/2019 20:42

@JustMyName what is the coaching situation like? And the rest of it seems a bit like myfitnesspal?

OP posts:
surlycurly · 28/12/2019 20:43

Yeah I wonder how much of it's hype?

I seem to remember doing a bit of checking and the daily allowance came in at just over 1100 cals. Way too low to be sustainable IMO. Get yourself over to the James Smith Academy. Unlimited free trial, amazing recipes and a sustainable eating plan.

No, I don't work for him. He's just amazing.

surlycurly · 28/12/2019 20:48

Ha thanks @confusedandemployed I'll have a look

Sorry, should have explained more .. you log meals, it tells you how many calories you've used and how many are left, how healthy the food you eat is, plus inspirational comments, notifications you remind you to log your food, you have a coach who is supposed to communicate daily with you, but it feels quite automated so far, just a message saying well done so far etc. I've attached a screen shot, hope that's ok. It also includes a pedometer. You can access recipes but pay extra for them.

JustMyName · 28/12/2019 20:49

Sorry, here's the screen shot

Have done this, liked the daily info/tips but the science language was heavy going.

the “coaching” was crap: formulaic and basically just asking you to goal set weekly. The groups had very few posts.

It’s calorie counting and foods categorised into red/amber/green. The food database has lots of gaps - My Fitness Pal one is better.

Think my calorie allowance was 1600 or so, and the food “rules” and categories were good for filling up on veg and other high volume lower calorie foods.

Dosie · 28/12/2019 21:43

Check out the Facebook site I find it quite inspirational,

IdiotInDisguise · 28/12/2019 23:12

It sounds a bit meh for more than £30 a month.

Gosh, I wish there was some sort of retreat where you could go, they cooked your meals healthily and within the target calories, while you spend the time relaxing and going for long walks, then going home a month later a stone lighter Grin

surlycurly · 28/12/2019 23:53

@IdiotInDisguise I'm in! Does seem like a lot of money for someone to tell me how many calories I can eat
And for me to do all the work logging my food etc. May just do the 5/2 diet again

For the food logging MFP is as good as if not better and free.

Find them on Facebook and you can sign up for two weeks trial, you pick how much you pay, I just paid £1. Just remember to cancel it.

FrenchFancie · 29/12/2019 06:15

I have done Noom and recently cancelled.
I liked the daily articles but found the tone a bit irritating after a while (fake hashtags like #noomnerd just made me want to roll my eyes).
It’s basically calorie counting but foods are also broken down into three colour calories according to calorific density- which was helpful to me.
As others have said, the live coaching was crap - just goal setting really. And it’s very very US centric, the database of foods is very US and everyone else in my group was from USA, which makes sharing things hard as group members often advise things not available over the pond.
BUT I did loose weight (nearly a stone) - I stopped because DD was admitted to hospital for a week and I couldn’t control my eating, had no time to do the reading etc. I felt like a fell too far behind to catch up again.

ArtistOfTheFloatingWorld · 29/12/2019 08:29

Don't waste your money, I cancelled mine. As above it's very US centric, and I found the motivational chat irritating and quite artificial. I didn't like the colour coding system for food either - you might as well just count calories.

Dozer · 29/12/2019 08:37

The lists of food by colour can be found online, I found those useful and I plan to refer to them and use my fitness pal to log, its database is much bigger/better.

I did find the colour coding useful. I’d been eating lots of “beige” foods and often felt hungry and made some good changes with loads more veg, wholegrains etc. For example most breakfast cereals are red.

Dozer · 29/12/2019 08:38

Another element was weighing yourself and logging weight every day. I was uncomfortable doing this but think it did help.

surlycurly · 29/12/2019 09:23

I think I'd find the coaching all a bit patronising. That would do my head in. Thanks for the info everyone.

I am doing the trial fortnight and running it concurrently with MFP which is free. So far cannot see any advantages in paying for Noom. And it is more US centric with quantities in cups and oz which is really annoying. So in conclusion I will not be continuing with Noom.

Blobby10 · 06/07/2020 08:08

I've been looking at this too but having read a lot of reviews and critiques, it seems to be a paid version of My Fitness Pal so why pay when you can get it for free? They don't seem to give any diet plans or anything sensible but maybe I'm reading it all wrong?
