Any amazing travel insurance experiences?

I’m researching travel insurance.

Claims experience is the real marker of whether a travel insurance policy is good or not. So I’m curious - anyone has any really good travel claims experience and, if so, with what company?!

Many thanks

UK Insurance were amazing. We had to cancel a £8k holiday 4 days before we were due to travel as DH needed emergency surgery. We got every penny less the excess back in less than 3 weeks.

It's the free insurance with our Nationwide accounts though so not sure if they sell direct.

We would not use Post office travel again. We had to make a small claim when taken ill in Europe. Added a few days to trip due to hospital stay. Took more than 8 weeks to settle even though they didn't dispute anything. Kept paying random amounts into the bank account £100 here, £72 there. Even when we complained they couldn't correctly add up the value of the claim minus the odd amounts they'd paid. Just seemed really unprofessional and disorganized.

Just looked - can’t buy directly unfortunately
Thanks though

We had a really good experience with insureandgo - though i think it was their platinum policy. DS got chickenpox the day before we were due to fly home from Jamaica. Virgin changed the flights for free but they covered all medical expenses and an equivalent hotel (we were at Beaches, family version of sandals, but was US spring break so couldn't extend our stay there. They covered another 5* all inclusive for us til we were cleared to fly.

Insure and Go
Expensive but paid up in full when we had to cancel a holiday.

Oh and for what it’s worth
Avoid Boots travel insurance at all costs. Absolutely diabolical

Great experience with the AA for a small claim in Europe. Paid fully and quickly and the call handler asked me about travel expenses to get to the dentist. She also reminded me that i could have phoned the helpline for assistance finding a dentist but was happy I'd found my own.

We had a great experience with Crispin Spears for a very unfortunate holiday accident a few years ago.

They covered everything - rescue personnel plus ambulances from activity to hospital, private ambulance to airport (and from LHR once back in UK), three seats for me plus one for my DH on plane, special treatment through airports both ends (wheelchair service, special lift just for me to get in to and off plane by wheelchair), all medical bills and full reimbursement of holiday (accident happened second day).

This travel insurance coverage was via DH employer as a taxable perk. I tell all my friends, make sure your holiday insurance has repatriation coverage. All this was organised by the insurance company.

We are with insureandgo but haven't had to claim but I was a bit worried to see negative press about them recently.

PaperFlowers4 · 28/12/2019 17:56

The insurance industry is tightly regulated and they all have to follow the same laws so it’s much of a muchness, really.

You just have to read the policy properly, which will be carefully written in unambiguous legal language. Any claim will come down to exactly what’s written in the policy.

Travel insurance is one of those things I just don’t scrimp on, it’s worth paying a bit more for a better policy and peace of mind!

lovemenorca · 28/12/2019 17:58

@PaperFlowers4 what company do you go for ?

I use different companies depending on what type of trip but the last one I made a claim with was Direct Travel Insurance. They refunded more than £1k for DH’s flights when he was struck down by illness the day before we flew. Claiming was simple and the refund was processed quickly, it wasn’t an expensive policy either.

mangopip · 28/12/2019 18:08

UK Insurance are part of the Direct Line Group. They underwrite NatWest and RBS as well as Nationwide. And Direct Line of course.

SpinjitzuMaster · 28/12/2019 22:24

We have an annual european policy and then do individual single policies if we go further afield. For our travel patterns thats the best option.

Can't praise Nationwide travel insurance highly enough. I got taken into hospital abroad. They put me in the best private hospital on the island and were amazing. Sorted everything out for us with no problem at all.

Legal & General. Paid out minus excess when a holiday had to be cancelled due to a close family member relapsed and became terminally ill. Always check the coverage when buying travel insurance, for example make sure you’re covered for a cruise if you are going on a cruise. A lot of people take out the basics and then are very unhappy when it doesn’t cover them at a time of crisis.
