Tell me about induction hobs, please

I think I want an induction hob, but researching all the features and functions and reviews etc is making my head spin a bit. Can anyone tell me anything about them? Are there any features that are essential (or any that aren’t worth the bother)? Should I get a hard wired or a plug in type? Are any brands better than others? Please help while the sales are on and I might get a bit of a bargain!

This has been the most helpful thread ever. Thanks so much, everyone, especially to @Teddyreddy for the detailed advice.

Induction hob has been purchased! I did want a wider one as the current (terrible) hob is rather wide so I wanted to fill the gap in the worktop with minimal hassle. John Lewis had a Bosch one quite drastically reduced in clearance and the right width so I'm really pleased.
I do need to buy new saucepans but mine are ancient anyway so that's ok. And my frying pans and cast-iron pans are fine.
Very happy!

Great decision!

BrokenWing, I don't know what my Stellar pans are made of but a strong magnet slides right off them. They're nice heavy pans, shiny silver, but just not magnetic.

@TrickyD
leanardthelemming, perhaps your HCP should read up on the vast amount of information available on the internet, starting with this Which report which refers to The British Heart Foundation’s advice.

Interesting article. It does, of course, state that there are many types of pacemaker and that one should seek medical advice - which is what I did.
Also, as a physics specialist who has taught medical physics in the past, I do have some vague idea as to how induction hobs work, and distance from the source is, of course, an important factor as the field strength falls off quite rapidly with it. Also, a normal pot-stirring position puts me quite a distance off axis as well.

But at the moment when I asked the question, the HCP was looking at the data (i.e. evidence) that my device had just uploaded to her computer and that, coupled with the fact I notice no problems when cooking, is good enough for me.

Of course, this does not mean your device won't be affected.

I do think, however, that we should always be sceptical about things we read. Articles like the Which report are likely to err on the side of caution, and even official, printed, medical advice may contradict that given by individuals.

We've got an induction hob and I wouldn't want anything else now. I hate gas with a passion - when we moved in one of the first things we did was get rid of the gas hob and oven. We've got the plug in 13amp hob (Bosch) as we'd have needed the electrics redone and it wasn't an option but it's a huge improvement in anything else.

Cats can’t burn their paws on induction hobs. Major selling point for me!

TrickyD · 30/12/2019 14:47

As long as you are happy, Leonardthelemming; your hob, your pacemaker, your heart.

Two years ago we bought a Neff induction hob with a removable central magnetic dial to change the rings/temperatures. Best kitchen appliance we ever bought!!

LuluJakey1 · 30/12/2019 22:51

Also what @Fluffycloudland77 said about cat paws. Very important point.

AlaskaElfForGin · 30/12/2019 22:55

Had mine 5 years now - I love it. So quick to heat and much much easier to clean than any hob I've ever had. Wouldn't go back

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 31/12/2019 10:25

Fluffy's point about cats not burning their paws is a good one and one of the reasons decided to change to induction.
