Need to book a holiday! Surf school resorts?

Just been surfing online when it came to me that that’s what my 13 year old would probably love to do in the summer! Thought I would look at some resorts that might be close to surf schools. Just looked at Devon Cliffs (Haven) bear Exmouth which looks decent. Would there be any surfing there? Anyone got any background info? Or any other Haven or Park Dean spots? Any info would be gratefully received ! Thanks in advance . (Does that rhyme? Still over indulging on the wine although I’ve stopped eating...nearly😂)

When we were in Portugal we saw that there were tonnes of good ones in the Algarve, with great waves! They were hostels with private bathrooms and right onto the beach.

Ah thank you for getting back to me
. I would prefer the UK if possible though.

There is a good surf school in St Ives in Cornwall on Porthmeor Beach. St. Ives is a lovely place.

Woolacombe bay, nice holiday park and also has a surf simulator to practice on

jellybeanteaparty · 28/12/2019 19:57

Sennen cove has a great surf school and it is very pretty although right down the end of the Cornwall

DobbyTheHouseElk · 28/12/2019 20:02

North coast in Cornwall is best for surf. Surf schools everywhere, several in each town.

PaulGalico · 28/12/2019 20:18

West Cornwall - Globalboarders Surf School based at Praa Sands. Lots of places to stay/ things to do locally. The surf school do a lot of work with local secondary schools (after school and weekend clubs) so would be great for a 13year old. We live in Cornwall - my son learnt to surf with them.

Saltburn by the sea has some great waves and surf schools. It's northern though so the weather may not be as great as down south. Lots of holiday rentals in that area.

Thanks so much everyone - lots of helpful info here.

You’re not going to get any surfing in south Devon unless you go to Bantham. Even there it’s pretty hit and miss. Your best bet for quiet beaches in the summer, good surf schools and cheap places to stay is South Wales.

Turkeydout · 29/12/2019 07:02

Hadn’t even thought about South Wales! Thank you - will have a look.

Staunton Sands - there are chalets as near as dammit on the beach, and surf schools. And it’s lovely.

mistletoeandwineymummy · 29/12/2019 07:14

Park Dean at Croyde. There's usually some waves there somewhere (and the pool is great.)

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 29/12/2019 07:39

I meant Saunton, not Staunton (autocorrect).

fiorentina · 29/12/2019 08:58

Polzeath in Cornwall. Plenty of surf schools and camping or rentals.

Celeriacacaca · 29/12/2019 10:05

Caswell Bay in South Wales. There's a lovely chalet park a 2 min walk from the beach.

TravellingSpoon · 29/12/2019 10:10

My DC's and I all learned to surf in Woollacombe a couple of years ago, and the local area is lovely.

Turkeydout · 29/12/2019 10:48

Thank you, all. Seen a couple of places in South Wales I fancy and I like the look of Woolacombe Bay. Which park would you recommend staying on in Woolacombe Bay for both ease of surfing and entertainment/activities ?

I was going to suggest Portugal but see you’d prefer UK.

We’ve been to Llangennith in Gower surfing for the last few summers and really enjoyed it. We brought our older boys who started from around 8 and have really enjoyed it. There are also some really good spots further west in Pembrokeshire but we’ve never made it that far.

Bubblysqueak · 29/12/2019 10:55

Had great surfing lessons in Newquay Cornwall.

pjmask · 29/12/2019 12:16

@Turkeydout the four parks at woolacombe are all close to each other and so personally I'd be guided by price. They are all close to the beach. Woolacombe bay and golden coast are the biggest, I think golden coast has the surf simulator. But you can stay at any of the four and use all the facilities. The other two parks are quieter and may not have evening entertainment but your passes will give you access to all four sites

Turkeydout · 29/12/2019 14:36

@pjmask Thank you! Good to know. Just making final decisions ... thanks everyone. Happy new year!
