Ideas for NYE Party

marjoretta · 27/12/2019 21:20

So it's our turn to host. This year we've got two couples and one half of a couple coming over plus 7 teenage children (who are not friends, but know each other because the adults are friends).

Formal meal is out as I couldn't fit everyone around the dinner table. So probably buffet food.

But it's the start of a new decade, and I often think my parties are a little flat compared to those my friends host, so would like to do something extra.

So tell me your best party ideas....

  • ideas for food
  • ideas for entertainment (adults and teenagers)

What are you doing to ensure the new decade goes off with a bang?

At New Years parties we would always have a quiz. So teams would be at random from a hat. Hosts would be quiz master. You could have various questions, maybe current affairs from throughout the last ten years? Different topics for all differences in knowledge.
A prize for the team and a funny booby prize. It kills an hour or so, is entertaining, and breaks the ice between young uns and older ones.

Cards Against humanity! Agree with the quiz idea.

Pinkyyy · 27/12/2019 21:33

I'd get a few fun games, Heads Up is a popular one for us. You have to download the app and hold your phone on your forehead, then the other people act out what's on the screen and you have to guess.

marjoretta · 27/12/2019 21:34

Thanks will look into heads up and cards against humanity. Two of the group do not like quizzes, so that one is best avoided. But thanks...

... and if there are any more!?!

Twister? You might have to get people a bit drunk first though. We like the cardboard box game where you try to pick up the box with your teeth without touching the floor and each round you rip a bit off so it gets harder. Playing cards.
Foodwise - would a fork supper type thing with a sausage casserole or a curry work? With some posher but easy nibbles like smoked mackerel pate, cheese or a baked camenbert. Trifle or cheesecake for pudding is traditional here! Depends what time you start, but at our nye parties food is a key part 😂

If you've got a way of putting youtube on your TV, search up 'juat dance' and get everyone to have a go, some of them are hilarious, like Rasputin

ivegotthisyeah · 27/12/2019 22:41

Heads up is a great game

starrynight19 · 27/12/2019 22:44

I can’t imagine teens wanting to play cards against humanity with parents.
A quiz is a good one or we play a game where you pick six or seven topics say animal , fruit , boys name , river etc and then give the teams a letter. If anyone else gets the same answer as you you don’t get a point. Always works for mixed age groups.

Fraggling · 27/12/2019 22:45

Age dependent but we did a cheese fondue, loads of booze and 80s music and everyone was cheerful Grin

marjoretta · 28/12/2019 19:14

Thanks for the suggestions. I have ordered the cards against humanity as my daughter has played that at school and said it's fun. Thought the teens could play that and got another card game for the adults.

Just a thought - cards against humanity, whilst brilliant, is supposed to be 17+ so if you have significantly younger guests it may or may not be a problem for parents

Stompythedinosaur · 28/12/2019 20:36

Drinking and board games are the features of our new year parties!

Sallycinammonbangsthedruminthe · 28/12/2019 21:06

Have a BBQ and some music outside ....if you have a gazebo even better as you could buy some hay bales cover them with tartan throws and a fire pit for warmth and some stringy lights ....we do this it equals no mess indoors and its so chilled its lovely....no one needs to dress up ...big coats and woolly hats are the dress code....some of our best parties have been outside ..cheap n cheerful and no hassle. Fill a bucket with apples and the brave can go apple bobbing or sit n toast marshmallows...Twister on the lawn always goes down well with adults n kids alike .

4forkssake · 28/12/2019 21:20

Don't Get Got game is good. You each get a card with secret missions to complete during the night, so it's not a sit down game. Pie Face or Speak Out are always fun with a few drinks.

Make some different punches or get a cocktail set & set up spirits, mixers, umbrellas, maraschino cherries etc & recipe book for people to make their own.

BBQ sounds a good idea - the weathers meant to be very mild on NYE.

Loads of nibbles & party food & get the teens to stick some music on. Maybe have an area the teens can go if they get fed up with the oldies with stuff for them to do, I think if you can keep them happy the night will be fine.

Izzabellasasperella · 28/12/2019 21:21

I'm doing a cocktail table, I've got some straws, cocktail umbrellas, fruit, mixers, ice, colourful stirrers, juice and alcohol of course. I'm going to print out some cocktail recipes and have asked my guests to bring one cocktail ingredient.

marjoretta · 28/12/2019 21:22

Thanks bathplug. It's for the older teens - 15/16, so that should be okay, the younger teens will play Xbox I expect!

Cross post 4forkssake 😊

kinsss · 28/12/2019 21:50

Plenty of booze.

Teens, send them off to another room, they only smile and pretend they're enjoying things for five minutes!

Easy food like a pot of curry or chilli. And rice. Keep food simple it is just a soaker upper!

Classic music stream. Not too loud.

Happy N Y !

Dogleg · 28/12/2019 21:53

Host your own race night!

www.amazon.co.uk/Cheatwell-Games-23250-Host-Night-2/dp/B07F88XD7Y/ref=sr_1_1?crid=37UIM59ZHI0FG&keywords=horse+racing+game&sprefix=Horse+racing+%2Caps%2C214&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1577569910&sr=8-1

This is great fun for all the family, I’d be doing easy one pot meals like a chilli and curry and rice or baked potatoes and a few lasagne.

RealJudas · 28/12/2019 22:16

Find what countries are in different time zones and then celebrate their new year each hour with something from that country (either an item of fancy dress or a food), eg Russia (vodka) is 2 hours ahead (this is off the top of my head you'd need to Google), Germany (sausages) 1 hour ahead etc.

marjoretta · 28/12/2019 23:09

Thanks for the great ideas.

Garden unfortunately is a disgrace and not up to socialising in.

Love the don't get caught game. Have ordered that. Think the teens will love that. Especially with a prize of a tenner for the winner!

Agreed with the simple food. Think we'll do chilli and jacket potatoes.

Dh not keen on race night, wants to keep it more active.

And will deffo hope the teens sod off to various rooms after they get here Smile.

Have a lovely night and let us know how it went😊.

GonnaBeMaayy · 05/01/2020 20:32

How did it go OP?

marjoretta · 05/01/2020 22:40

Ah sorry, yes it went well.

Ended up not playing cards against humanity as a friend brought over a game and we did that.

We did do the don't get got game, but one of the teens had easy challenges, and completed it very quickly. So I think if we play it again, I'd change the rules, including allowing people to swap their challenges as some seemed nigh on impossible.

But it was a fun night. Thanks.
