6 & 4 too young for bunk beds?

We are finally sorting out the DC's bedroom and I've spotted a bunk bed I really like. Their room is not huge so I'd prefer this to 2 separate beds. However a few friends who have had negative experiences are warning me off. One friend who purchased a bunk bed when her two were the age mine are now said they were "far too young", her younger child ended up sleeping in her bed and it was all an expensive mistake. Her DC now sleep happily in single beds.

I've heard tales of DC falling out/jumping off the top bed, the top bed becoming a place where toys & clothes are hidden and so on. No-one seems to have anything good to say.

Does anyone else think 6 & 4 is too young?

My boys are in bunk beds. They are 3 and 2 years old! Oldest is on the top. And the bunk beds have a ladder! We really didn't have much choice. We've had no problems whatsoever. We did add a bed guard to the bottom bunk.

I love IKEA for lots of things but their bunk beds look a bit too..functional for the look I'm aiming for. I've got an idea of what I want the room to look like but tbh think I've got a bit carried away with the pitch perfect kids bedrooms I've been looking at on PinterestBlush

Teen - Hadn't considered EBay as assumed it would involve the hassle of having to arrange pick up and also also want to buy new (not sure if you meant buying 2nd hand)

Yes, I meant 2nd hand (but buy new mattress). We saved £££ on DD's bed with additional storage units and it really did look pretty much good as new - still does 9 years on. (But DH has a big car for pick up purposes.)

TeenPlus Lidl and Aldi do the bigger sheets, they fit really well.

Cactus Thank you, that's good to know, (though last time I really stocked up so may not need any for a while).

Found it sat in my Amazon orders - these are what my kids have. The younger one has fairly severe dyspraxia and the only things that have fallen out of bed ever have been the 50cm high bright pink hideous unicorn.

RhymingRabbit3 · 30/12/2019 19:41

Sounds like the ideal age, assuming the 6yo is fairly sensible and not going to deliberately jump off the bed or throw stuff around.

Neighneigh · 30/12/2019 19:53

This isn't a reason not to get them but you'll need a degree in gymnastics to change the sheets on the top....or maybe it's just me that struggles (and we only have cabin bed).

Eastie77 · 30/12/2019 23:13

Oh god, I actually hadn't thought about changing sheets on the top bed!

My oldest two were in bunks from age 5 and 3. We had no issues at all...it was just a case of making sure they knew the rules-no standing up on the top bunk etc.

Fitted sheets sheets are a must for the top bunk though, that’s a ball ache enough but trying to tuck in flat sheets would be a nightmare!

SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 30/12/2019 23:19

The Steen bunks are amazing (heavy, solid, danish etc). But the top bunk is very high, so just double check that you're happy with that. The ladder is easy to climb though, I'm very happy with ours. Definitely worth the money, will easily last 10+ years

Elbeagle · 30/12/2019 23:21

Mine were 4 and 3 and we had no issues.

Ohyesiam · 30/12/2019 23:21

Mine were 2&4 and were very happy

Canyousewcushions · 30/12/2019 23:24

My oldest slept in the bottom bunk from 3, promoted to the top at 4 when her 1 year old sister moved into the bottom. It's worked fine for us.

It depends so much on the individual children involved....

They'll be fine, ignore friends and do what's best for you.
