New to the game.

When you move into a room to make a suggestion and there is already a weapon there do you have to suggest that weapon or can you move another weapon into the room? If so, do you swap them over or just continue with two in the same room? Thanks

You can use any weapon in any room. Sometimes all the weapons end up in the same room, or just name your suspect weapon but leave it wherever it was.

festivefrustration · 26/12/2019 14:33

Oh thank you!

It felt like such hard work playing with my kids but we really enjoyed it. I’m sure we’ll get the hang of it soon.

I played it for the first time with my kids on Christmas Day. A boring and confusing load of old shit! Completely overrated in my view.

festivefrustration · 27/12/2019 20:54

I really liked it but will definitely need a few more plays to definitely get the hang of it.

You move the weapon to the room you are in, it doesn't matter if they all end up in the same room. Or leave it where it is, it's really up to you how you want to do it.

festivefrustration · 27/12/2019 20:58

Thanks Betty. We will have another go tomorrow.

Can’t decide which makes my brain hurt more, Labyrinth or Cluedo!

TeenPlusTwenties · 27/12/2019 21:02

You move the weapon (and the person).

Top tips:

  • keep track of who has shown you what.
  • keep track of what you have shown people
  • use the above info to 'deduce' extra stuff. e.g. If Andy has shown you Mrs Peacock, and you have the Dagger, then if Betty asks for Mrs Peacock, Dagger and Conservatory and Charlie shows her something, you know Charlie has shown Conservatory so you can cross it off.
  • you can use a card you have if you want to be sure to eliminate one of the other types
  • make it more fun by enhancing the suggestions, e.g. 'I suggest this great and heinous crime was brutally carried out by...'
bettybattenburg · 27/12/2019 21:09

I haven't played Labyrinth for years.

We have been known to change the names of the Cluedo characters, we've had politicians, reality tv stars and so on - when it was the election we had Boris Johnson (Peacock), Jeremy Corbyn (Scarlet) and Jo Swinson (Mustard). It all got rather silly.

Choppersicballs · 27/12/2019 21:49

Those are some crafty suggestions Teen!! I like it.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 27/12/2019 21:51

It’s a classic game. It works better once all players understand the rules. Agree with pp, keep an eye on who is asking for what. You have to look at all the clues.

TheFestiveIf · 27/12/2019 22:02

I've lost count of the number of times I've played this game and got it totally wrong because someone has accidentally sat on a key card after a particularly cack-handed shuffle.

bettybattenburg · 27/12/2019 22:12

You can duplicate what you tell people too, if somebody asks about Mrs White, dagger and lounge and then later Mrs White, dagger and ballroom you know they are sure they know about the person and object but not the room so tell them Mrs White or the dagger again.

GreenTulips · 27/12/2019 22:16

Also first few goes ask about things you don’t have! If you’ve been shown the dagger you don’t ask again.

Watch each player as they can give away clues.

Towards the end watch players ask the same eg -they know it’s green in the kitchen and are trying to track the weapon.

Also with little kids we just took a turn each time rather than move round the board.

Sagradafamiliar · 27/12/2019 22:20

Cluedo puts the bored into board game. So tedious I was nearly crying playing it!

GreenTulips · 27/12/2019 22:24

My daughter has guessed right twice on the first go! Never seen anyone do that and she never cheated it.

festivefrustration · 27/12/2019 23:51

Just played with my OH and don’t think my note taking really got me anywhere Grin

While we are talking about games, anyone in the know about Ticket to Ride? I’m quite keen to get it for a child turning 9. Is that too young and if so do I go with London? UK?

I love Cluedo, not played it this Christmas, Teen has all the top tips, I knew you were my kind of gal @TeenPlusTwenties! Never thought of enhanced suggestions!

I always ask two things I have and one I don't. I sometimes ask three things I have just to make everyone think I've found the answer (cackle)

clary · 27/12/2019 23:56

Also never show the room if you can help it, that's the hardest to work out and then you realise you are in the ballroom and need to be in the kitchen... grrrr

TeenPlusTwenties · 28/12/2019 07:45

(I win at Cluedo in my house more times than chance would have it. Mainly because the rest of the family are too methodical. They like to rule one thing out at a time so tend to ask for 2 things they have plus one they don't. I reckon it is far better to ask for 3 things you don't have as you may strike lucky. But I keep an eye on what others are asking for (especially the rooms) as it helps inform what to hone in on.)

CormoranStrike · 28/12/2019 07:49

I love ticket to ride.

We got it this Christmas. I think a nine year old would get it, but they might need some help, or okay a basic version (no stations etc).

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 28/12/2019 07:55

I put a different mark in the box depending who shows me the card. So dots are Jim and crosses are Bob. Then as others ask for cards I know who has what.

I also sometimes choose two I already have so I'm only looking for one card. If no one can show me then that's the winning card.

Bumpinthenight · 28/12/2019 08:20

Ticket to Ride is great for the whole family! We played it on Christmas Eve.

We have the original American version. DD has been playing it since she was 9.

smemorata · 28/12/2019 08:24

Cluedo is great unless you are playing with people who don't get bluffing which is the fin part! Ticket to Ride is a bit complicated for us oldies but the 9 year olds seem to manage! We enjoyed Monopoly with the credit cards - much faster moving. Still have to try Camel Up - any tips?

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 28/12/2019 08:36

There are much better games!

Ticket to ride yes. Get the original or Europe first. Your 9 year old will be fine. The sets such as London, Nordic etc are great too but often for fewer players (Nordic is max 3 players).

Look at catan, Carcassonne, pandemic, through the desert, 7 wonders, azul, splendor, tsuro, tokaido, takenoko or smaller table top games like rhino hero, deep sea adventure, zombie dice, dobble, exploding kittens, nyet.... the world of board games is vast and wonderful!

It totally depends what you like. There are a lot of very involved character/ role player games and games that inhabit strange worlds but also lots and lots of games that are just interesting and fun and don't involve deep levels of geekery (nothing wrong with it, I'm a geek in many ways just not in gaming).

TeenPlusTwenties · 28/12/2019 09:18

I like The London Game as it has strategy but also some level of randomness. Plus it helps with knowledge of tube stations. Grin It is good for a wide range of ages and requires less concentration than Cluedo.
