Meat left in the oven overnight

We are staying at MILs and we cooked pork and turkey today. MIL has put them in the cold oven overnight to store , when I suggested that the fridge would be better it was greeted with horror and laughter!

Do other people do this and do they live to tell the tale?
I am always super panicky about keeping meat fresh!

God, my in-laws leave food sitting on a little table in the garden shed overnight. They think because it’s cold out there it’s as good as a fridge. The actual fridge is full to bursting, Christmas or not.

This may be true but all I can think of when I’m there is how many mice must be running around the place, attracted by the smell of the food.

My own mother prepares her turkey and ham and leaves them sitting on the worktop covered in foil overnight because she can’t fit them in the fridge.

This horrified me bit I have learned to say nothing or she flips out.

I think a lot of people must have turkey issues tonight. It’s hard to fit one of those buggers in a standard fridge.

I wouldn't be happy to eat that meat tomorrow.

DramaAlpaca · 25/12/2019 01:41

God no, I'm with you. In our house cooked meats are cooled then put in the fridge overnight, like we've done with our ham this evening. I wouldn't be happy about meat being left overnight in a cold oven, not one little bit.

greenlynx · 25/12/2019 01:52

I wouldn’t eat it, I know some people would but it doesn’t matter for me. Better to be safe than sorry, especially on Christmas Day when A&E is very busy.

LimpidPools · 25/12/2019 02:01

Nevertheless, it will be absolutely fine. And putting roast meat in the fridge makes it go tough.

thinking2019 · 25/12/2019 02:17

My DH stores everything in the microwave! Roast cooked and eaten and leftovers go in to the rectangle of doom!

DH has cooked/smoked so many things (delicious by the way) and my DF has been horrified by the keeping of them afterwards in the rectangle of doom.

We have never been ill from it but it does make me wince a bit!

Bluerussian · 25/12/2019 02:19

They will be absolutely fine, they're cooked and cooked meat is OK up to three days.

.......
I always cooked the turkey 'on the day' but then got husband to carve it all up and put the meat on plates which did fit in fridge.

My mum used to cook a turkey the size of a dinosaur, no way would it fit in the fridge and the carcass was left on the work top covered in foil to be eaten between Christmas and New Year. Her house is very warm, looking back I can’t believe the turkey never went off and made us ill.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 25/12/2019 09:06

Her house is very warm, looking back I can’t believe the turkey never went off and made us ill.

But it does illustrate the reality... We are far to scared if our food these days.

My capon was taken out of the fridge last night, to come to room temperature. Once cooked the carcass will remain on the side until stone cold... not going into the fridge until it is as that makes the meat really tough.

There are all sorts of 'food rules' that are inappropriate for a household. They all escaped from the catering industry, where extra care is needed because of the environment.

Chill out a bit, enjoy your Christmas.

NotYourHun · 25/12/2019 09:35

Wouldn’t phase me tbh.

FruityWidow · 25/12/2019 09:40

Better to cook joints of meat from room temp instead of fridge temp. Stops the meat from tensing up with the sudden temp difference. If it's going in the oven first thing in the morning no harm in sitting out (covered) overnight.
