Does Father Christmas do a tour of your town / village on Christmas Eve? (as organised by local Round Table or similar)

I must be getting soft starting a Christmas-related thread.

In our town / large village, every year at this time, a festively decorated flat-bed truck comes round with Santa on the back. He visits every road ringing his bell, and it's quite the event with over-excited children rushing outside to cheer and wave. It's just happened in our road (we're pretty much the last road, so he must have started hours ago).

I was just wondering how unusual this is. Does it happen where you live? (Without completely outing myself, I'm near Cambridge).

Yes, Santa comes round the streets.
I couldn't help but laugh. This year DH's business was asked to sponser the event. Dd knows the colour and logo of DH's vans.
She made a point of asking if Daddy knew Santa😂😂😂😂

Not this close to Christmas but our local Rotary club do the rounds about a fortnight before the big day. Suburb of a medium sized town.

The Lions Club do it around here and we help with one village. We get money for our Guides and Scouts in return for us leaders helping. It rains every year, starts too early to make childcare easy and is tiring with all the walking but this year was the 4th year that we've done it and will carry on for as long as they want us.

Yes, the Lions Club in the big village up the road cover about 5 or 6 villages, they come round in evenings, for about 3 weeks up to Christmas. They publish their schedule on local FB pages.

We have two different organisations organising stuff like this.

Our local Rotary club organise tours of different sections of town over a week with the Santa sleigh, which was last week.

We also have our local firefighters doing similar with their Trumpton fire engine, raising money for local charities. It's a mini fire engine mock up, and kids love it.

Yep they do it here from the beginning of December to get round everywhere. It's the local Lions club.

ShinyNewNameTimeAgain · 24/12/2019 21:15

The Lions do it round here in a conservatory on a flatbed that was donated by a double glazing company that went bust in the early 90’s. Still covered in their branding. It’s really good and dc’s get so excited.

daisypond · 24/12/2019 21:17

No. I have never heard of this in my entire life - and I’m in my 50s.

Ginfordinner · 24/12/2019 21:17

Yes. They go round the local villages every weekend during advent. We get a brass band playing carols round our village on the last Sunday before Christmas as well.

PathOfLeastResitance · 24/12/2019 21:17

Yes. He visits around here and collects money to buy vouchers for families in need. I know some families that have benefitted this year and the difference that it has made to them is lovely to see at this time of year.

Lions club do it here (W Yorks) - apparently they used to knock on doors but they needed to knock louder because the announcement they were no longer knocking came as something as a shock. They have an app this year instead. I love it.

I grew up in north Cambs and there was nothing of the sort!

DadDadDad · 24/12/2019 21:19

Thanks for all the responses. It may be the Rotary Club who do it here - get muddled with Round Table. Until we moved here, I'd never come across it, so I didn't realise it was so common. I've worked out this was the 17th time for us seeing it! Xmas Smile

MiseryChops · 24/12/2019 21:20

Yep
We live in a city so they do it every day for 14 days in the lead up to it.

Funnily enough they always do the poshest part on Xmas eve

TitianaTitsling · 24/12/2019 21:21

Our Young Farmers do it, Santa's sleigh is pulled around the village by a tractor and kids love it- DC only complaint was it wasn't a Massey Ferguson!!

ExpletiveFairylighted · 24/12/2019 21:22

Yes, Round Table do it here, takes most of December now though as so many new estates have been built round the town.

SillyUnMurphy · 24/12/2019 21:23

Where I grew up Father Christmas coming round the town on his ‘sleigh’ was a source of much excitement. I think it was done by the Rotary Club. Now DH and I live in London no one has ever heard of doing this Sad

happyjules · 24/12/2019 21:46

Yes we do on Christmas Eve our local village fairies do it and have done for about forty years. It is now organised by those that were the early recipients of the selection packs that are given out. Any donations received keep it going and " profit " goes to local preschool or other local charity
