What can cause symptoms of T1 diabetes but isn't?

DS (11) was seen at the hospital today as he has chronic constipation. He mentioned to the nurse that he hasn't been feeling well over the last week or so, he's extremely tired, very thirsty, very hungry and going to the toilet a lot. I'd already started to become concerned about these symptoms but wanted to monitor for another week or so.

The nurse did a urine sample which was normal and a finger prick blood test which was also normal, 6.3. Big sigh of relief from us all and off we went. I've just received a call from the hospital to say that the nurse had talked to the on call consultant and he was quite concerned and I'd get an appointment to go back within the next 2 weeks. I'm to keep an eye on him but to seek medical attention if he becomes unwell at all or if I feel his "symptoms" are getting worse. They also want me to weigh him each day up until the appointment to see if he's losing any weight.

I presume that as his blood sugar was fine then he definitely doesn't have diabetes? If so, does anyone know what else could cause these symptoms or could the consultant just be being overly cautious? Obviously I know no one here can diagnose him but just wondered if anyone had been through anything similar? Thanks in advance!

When t1 diabetes is starting to kick in you can get high blood sugars one day, low the next. They probably want to monitor your DS for a longer period since he is experiencing classic symptoms. (Wish they had done that for my family member who was ill for two years before diagnosis.)

Hope he is ok.

Thank you for your reply BalloonSlayer, I had no idea the levels could fluctuate in T1, just presumed if they were normal then that meant it wasn't diabetes. Glad they're following up now! Hopefully it is absolutely nothing.

Hypercalcaemia can cause these symptoms although its rare at his age. It can be detected via a blood test.
