My 2 to been prescribed steroids for croup. We have been given tablets, she needs to take 5 in one go. We crushed them up in juice as advised, but it tastes properly vile and she won't drink it even though thirsty. Any tips on how to get them into her.

can you syringe the apple juice mixture into the back of her throat so she doesn't have to taste it?

SeaToSki · 24/12/2019 11:12

Go back to the chemist and ask for them to re do the prescription as a suspension or liquid.

Mrsjayy · 24/12/2019 11:12

I would wrap her in a blanket cradle her and scoosh them down the side of her mouth with a syringe.

Or forget about it for now take the juice away and maybe mix it in yoghurt /ice cream at lunch time.

You should be able to get soluble tablets, they dissolve in a little water then add juice. The flavour isn't too bad.

Sirzy · 24/12/2019 11:18

The soluble tablets in a small amount of black current juice and then syringed in is the best way to make them palatable (much experience of wearing predinisolone here!)

flossletsfloss · 24/12/2019 11:23

We could never get steroids down my DS. He vomited them up every single time. Even mixing it in juice and syringing it into the back corner of his mouth. Every nurse in his ward tried. In the end we had to ride it out. Best of luck. They are truly vile. X

stripeypillowcase · 24/12/2019 11:29

those ice cream syrups are great for disguising meds.

or nutella or jam.
whatever toddler fancies.

MrsPMT · 24/12/2019 11:29

@flossletsfloss was that the soluble tablets or just tablets? Never had a problem with DS taking the soluble ones but other ones very difficult.

MissSkate · 24/12/2019 11:32

My boy had these recently. What worked for us was hiding the whole tablet in a really thick chocolate dessert or in the middle of a spoon of icecream and encouraging him to swallow the whole spoon at once. Good luck!

Thanks all. She just puked them all back up again. This is a pretty shite Christmas. The kids just recovering from a nasty bug and we have both come down with it. My DP is the shittiest patient in the world. Mr man flu. This is not going to be fun.

It was both the liquid (which they will prescribe if you push for) and the tablets crushed up. He just wouldn't tolerate any of it. We could get it down him and then he would projectile vomit it back up.

flossletsfloss · 24/12/2019 11:58

OP You have my sympathies. Some children have a strong wretch response.

Smurf123 · 24/12/2019 11:59

We found petit filous the best thing to mix medicine in so ds would actually take it

Kaykay066 · 24/12/2019 12:07

Phone gp ask for dexamethasone instead as a solution
New pred white tablets are revolting dissolved, my son takes the tablets now as it’s preferable to dissolving them he takes 8
Many kids vomit them up they used to be pink but too expensive apparently so swapped to these bitter white ones.
Problem about putting them in food/drink is they need to eat or drink it all to get the full dose or you risk under dosing and it not working.

Pure orange juice used to be what I mixed stuff in for my now 9 year old he never took Any meds ever, till he got tonsillitis and was quite poorly.
Hope she takes it somehow or you can get some dex and feeling better and have a lovely Christmas

danni0509 · 24/12/2019 12:13

Fresh orange juice and put the tablet it in, is it prednisolone? (how ever you spell it!) it's the only thing that masked the taste a bit, still a nightmare though and he didn't take the full dose. Although I did ask the doctor for an extra dose in the end because of the spitting it all back up.

Ds has very bad croup 2 years ago, he had obstructive sleep apnea aswell his tonsils touched in the middle and I did not sleep a wink he was sent home from a & e which I was suprised at as he was seriously struggling to breathe.

He was ok after about 2 days thank god, it was awful!

Hope your dc is ok Thanks

Mixing with Chocolate Frijj milkshake worked with getting DS to take antibiotics. He was puking them back up even once we’d got them down him prior to that.
