Not Christmas but summer 1998. I got 8A grades in my GCSEs and my dad (not given to grand gestures and certainly not generally in tune with what a just 16 year old would love) came home with a huge Body Shop hamper for me. It was the best thing anyone had ever bought me and perfect given the work I had put in. I still remember the excitement 30 years later!

My best friend loves gifting and has got me a small thoughtful gift for every birthday since we were teenagers. One year she had been to some kind of trendy/ arty farty craft fair and my gift was a frog soft toy made out of a sock, with button eyes, long ribbons for legs and wearing a small tutu. It is somehow the more adorable and endearing item EVER! I don't know why but I just adore it and it's been in pride of place in my kitchen where ever I've lived for about 8 years. Whenever my best friend comes to my house she laughs and says "I love how much you love that frog'" and I say "I LOVE THAT FROG"
It kind of symbolises our friendship now.
Wow that sounds ridiculous written down 😅

I am having a little weep at all your lovely happy/sad stories. This is such an emotional time of year. Unmumsnetty Christmas hugs to you all.

My daughter when she was a trainee about 10 years ago. She was absolutely skint so I told her not to bother with presents, but she turned up on Christmas Day with a copy of Vogue magazine, a bar of chocolate and a £1 scratch card for me. She'd wrapped it beautifully and really taken care.

Since then she's started her own business and now earns loads. She's bought me a designer bag this year ( I know because she checked with me first), but nothing compares to that gift she put so much love into.

I've got a tear in my eye just remembering!

Not crying at all, not at all.
Sobs

Love this thread, such a great reminder that gift giving is more than the piles of 'stuff'.

My DH has given me some lovely gifts over the years, but people wouldn't count them as being good.
For example, first birthday gift he got me was a hand blender (he knew I really wanted one but felt it was an extravagance so he treated me) and another time he got me a Bailey's Easter egg for mother's Day. (He knew how much I loved the Bailey's chocolates and that was the only available option at the time.) So to other people they are barmy gifts, but to me they are so thoughtful and special.

I am really enjoying these posts whilst sat with the twinkly lights and dog and husband snoring next to me.
Happy Christmas all :-)

Dc have made me a small picture and put it inside a homemade cracker. I'm looking forward to opening it in the morning.

My mum knitted me a cardi a few years ago. It's too small now but I still have it.

My parents used to put a massive bag of midget gems sweets in my stocking. Mum would take all the blacks out because I don’t like them.

That is so lovely!
Reminded me of mine (sweet themed too!) Mum made me a sweet shop!
It was my main present and was a cardboard box with strips of card for shelves decorated with wrapping paper. Lots of tiny labelled jars of sweets on the shelves.
I already had a till and I was so happy! I loved it 💕
