I need a really good red cabbage recipe

MrsSpenserGregson · 23/12/2019 18:37

This is my first Christmas as a vegetarian, and I've been looking forward to having red cabbage on Christmas Day for months. (Yes I lead a sad life). I'd ordered the braised red cabbage and apple dish from M&S which I collected yesterday, but when I got it home it had spit open and leaked all over my bag Xmas Shock

So I'll have to make it myself as there's no way I'm going to a big supermarket again before Christmas Day, and our local Tesco express /sainsburys local don't have any red cabbage dishes. There are loads of recipes online but I need something that has been tried and tested - help me please MNetters!

I always trust Delia with the classics

I was just going to advise you buy the red cabbage and apple by M&S - I'm having it for dinner tonight and LOVE it Grin. Sorry yours got ruined.

I always use the Delia one and get lots of compliments!

gobbynorthernbird · 23/12/2019 19:22

Another vote for Saint Delia (mine is in the oven right now, it's always better after a day or so).

wineandsunshine · 23/12/2019 19:22

I've just made delias in the slow cooker and it smells bloody amazing!!!

LBOCS2 · 23/12/2019 19:23

Delia, always, 100%.

Movinghouseatlast · 23/12/2019 19:24

Yes Delia. Although I made Jaimie Oliver's one from his Christmas book yesterday and it was gorgeous. Just leave out the bacon.

CondeNasty · 23/12/2019 19:26

I am getting organised and have my Delia one in the oven too Xmas Smile. You can never go wrong with her recipes, her complete collection is the one cookbook I not only kept but replaced when it fell to bits.

ByAppointmentTo · 23/12/2019 19:28

In case you were in any doubt Delia's is great! It works just as well being done in the oven or slow cooker.

MiniMaxi · 23/12/2019 19:36

This one is very nice too!

I make Mary berry's - so easy and yummy!

scaryteacher · 23/12/2019 19:50

Delia, and it freezes well to boot.

scaryteacher · 23/12/2019 19:51

Been making it since 1990 when 'Christmas' was first published, and it is always good.

OnlyHippyInTheVillage · 23/12/2019 19:51

This one and only this one. Easy, tangy,
fruity and completely delicious!!

I think I usually make this one:
www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/3064/braised-red-cabbage-with-cider-and-apples%3famp

Which is almost identical to Delia’s but it cooks in cider. I’m going to do it in the slow cooker this year for space reasons

Sweetooth92 · 23/12/2019 19:58

Another vote for Deliah. It’s lovely

motorcyclenumptiness · 23/12/2019 20:12

Yarp to Delia's. It's unkillable - it gets better the longer you keep it in the fridge and it freezes really well too.

Housewife2010 · 23/12/2019 20:23

I recommend Delia too.

MrsSpenserGregson · 23/12/2019 21:20

Ok perfect, thank you everyone. I'll do the Delia one tomorrow morning and pop it in the fridge overnight; then I'll try one of the BBC ones next time and decide which I prefer! Xmas Smile

Delia's - I'm just freezing some now to enjoy in January....

MrsSpenserGregson · 24/12/2019 11:12

Delia's red cabbage is in my oven as we speak Xmas Grin

Ditto 😁

foamrolling · 24/12/2019 11:53

I forgot to get any bramley apples and can't be bothered to go out to the shops again. Do you reckon I could use normal apples and leave out some/all of the sugar from the waitrose or delia recipes?

pomegranatefizz · 24/12/2019 14:32

Ooh I'm following this as I've recently developed a possibly unhealthy love for red cabbage!
