Painful, explosive pooing

I've got a 3 month old with a pooing problem. She cannot do a pain without straining, to the point where she screams in pain. When she does finally poo it's always when I'm breast feeding and it always explodes. It interrupts her sleep and she seems miserable all the time. I don't know whether it's a wind problem, immaturity problem or something more serious. She is purely breast fed and the poos are always soft and fine.

Take her to the Drs
Shes 3 months old, you shouldnt hesitate.

If you ring the doctors now they might put you on the list for the end of today so you won’t be worrying and she won’t be in pain over Christmas, my doctors are amazing and would definitely do this x

We're thinking the doctors is the only option now. She's only just turned 12 weeks, so I may wait until week 13, as people have told me week 12 is "magic" week when it comes to babies tummies. During her 8 week check-up I was told it was colic, and every fortnight when I get her weighed Im fobbed off with colic too. Frustrating.

I wouldn’t allow my child to be screaming in pain over someone saying a week is magic week. She’s in pain and still so so tiny..

Rainallnight · 23/12/2019 17:48

No, don’t wait.

Rainallnight · 23/12/2019 17:49

These magic this and wonder that are largely bollocks.

Had the exact same problem with my DS, definitely see your HV and/or GP about it. This is what I think mine had (never got a definitive answer from GP/HV): www.aboutkidsgi.org/childhood-defecation-disorders/infant-dyschezia.html

Echoing above, please don't wait another week.

Helen8822 · 23/12/2019 20:44

I've seen 3 different HVs who all said it's colic and as long as she's gaining weight and thriving not to worry, so I'm worrying I'm over reacting. I've researched infant dyschezia and thought it sounded very similar to her symptoms. How long did it take your little one to learn how to pass without straining?

a baby doesn't learn how to not strain, if it's hurting to go then baby needs to see a doctor again.

It took my DS a good 6 months (maybe even a bit longer) before he stopped having poo issues - from day 1 he had poo issues, he'd scream, strain, cry, and as soon as he'd done it he'd settle, it was v clear his discomfort was linked to that. He was EBF too.

I raised it with the HV, and the GP, they said colic, pushed further and eventually managed to get to see a paediatrician who recommended going dairy-free in case it was CMPA. I didn't notice a big difference off dairy but I think that was because by the time I cut it out he seemed to be getting better anyway, in hindsight I should've done that earlier.

Things I tried that helped: baby massage (the specific one for colic, will try and find links), jiggling him up and down, and my secret weapon was "the car" - I'd lie on my back with my knees up, sit him on my lap facing me and leaning against my knees, and jiggle around while playing the car noise from the Sound Sleeper app (best app ever Grin) Seemed to soothe him and maybe the jiggling helped get things moving.

Anyway as others have said def take baby to GP, but there are things you can try in the meantime to ease the discomfort

Isbutteracarb · 24/12/2019 20:48

This is very similar to the colic massage I used:
