Hi elderly grandparents visiting West London and just told us that grandad can't get upstairs to loo this time. 😐😐Anyone got a commode chair stored that I could borrow for 5 days?

And they've just sprung this on you? Shock

A local Red Cross branch might be able to help.

There used to be a motability shop on South Ealing road - not sure if it is still there. Otherwise call age concern to see if they rent them out.

I can't believe they've only just mentioned this!!! Xmas Shock

You need a local mobility shop (not shopmobility - that's for borrowing items to get you around the high street). A quick google throws up this one which seems to have a showroom on Western Avenue
www.londonmobilityretail.co.uk/daily-living/bathroom-equipment/ but there will be others out there

Argos sell commode chairs.

Thanks to everyone who replied so quickly - I am checking out the suggestions. Unfortunately grandad has suffered a turn for the worst in the last week or so. We are so happy they can still visit, but a bit thrown! If anyone can lend me a commode please do reply.

Deep breath and think more widely.
Is trying to get a chair the best answer of addressing the issue that they have taken a turn for the worst?

Is travel wise? In my experience elderly people who manage well at home can really struggle when taken out of their own environment.

Yes I agree. If the commode is for 24*7 use rather than a night convenience then how are you going to organise the rooms and manage this? Will he cope well in a different environment?

If you think it is practical then my first port of call would be to ring the nearest Red Cross branch:

www.redcross.org.uk/get-help/borrow-a-commode

Are you sure this is the only piece of equipment you would need?

Poor granddad. You need to ring the Red Cross and they will organise one. I would imagine if anyone on here has a commode, it will be in use by the person who needs it. When my gran was unwell, we hired one and they supplied clinical waste bags as well.

GUNWEN · 23/12/2019 12:05

Thanks for the advice you are all so kind. Just the worst time as many Red Cross seem to be closed for Xmas period. We have a downstairs bedroom so apart from the loo all is fine

Phone your community nursing service and ask for help. They don't close for Christmas.

winterelf · 23/12/2019 12:36

Have you posted on Hanwell friends and Ealing/Northfields friends Facebook? Thousands of people on there and there are often posts looking for miscellaneous medical equipment for visiting relatives... you'd have more luck with something specifically local than Mumsnet I think....

CharlotteFlax · 23/12/2019 12:40

The problem with the OP calling her local community nurses is that Grandad isn't their patient so there may not be much they can do for him. I think best bet might be posting on local Facebook pages to see if someone local has one for you.
