What does Christmas Day look like in your house?

I don’t know if this thread has been done to death, but I couldn’t find anything so here we are.

What does Christmas Day look like in your house?

For us, me DH (and for the first time DC Grin) get up Xmas morning and open our presents to each other.

We then have bacon on bagels for breakfast and get dressed into our fancy Christmas outfits.

Head to the in-laws around 10am and swap gifts with them - there are 500 of them so we stay until about 12pm.

Then off to my parents for dinner and games until about 6:30pm.

Then home, cheese board and wine and watch shite on tv until bedtime.

We might throw a walk in at my parents as they live opposite a really lovely walking trail but other than that we lay like potatoes all day.

I love Christmas and I’m a nosey cow, so please enthral we me with your Christmas Day routines.

Dcs Wake up between 7-8, go downstairs and they open there stocking whilst I make a tea. Then we all open presents and fart arse about for a bit. Then have a bath whilst dcs have breakfast. Then aim to be round my mums for 11 where there's more presents. Back home by 1 to start dinner. After dinner we go round sils at about 6 ish and stay till about 11. By that time I'm knackered

Have smoked salmon and eggs then open a couple more presents.
Get dinner on and get ready.
Guests arriving from 1 and we will eat at 3.
Open the last of presents after dinner.'some will go for a walk, others will snooze.
We wil play games, chat, listen to music.
Christmas Day has always been a tv free day at my house.

Up around 7-8. DS brings his stocking presents in to our room and opens then. Come downstairs, ds does Santa sack while we have coffee. We do gifts to each other. Bacon butties and mimosa breakfast and get dressed. Begin cooking christmas dinner. We tag team this while spending time playing games, watching TV and drinking champagne. Eat about 3pm and lounge on sofa. Further snacks may make any appearance later on. We don't go out. It is the only day we spend at home, just us three, and we love it.

lynsey91 · 22/12/2019 19:04

Me and DH get up about 7.30 and have croissants, orange juice and coffee for breakfast.

We then start peeling potatoes, carrots, parsnips and brussel sprouts for dinner. Also prepare the cauliflower and make the yorkshire pudding batter. We will have made the veggie vegetable strudel on Christmas Eve.

All my family come for dinner so 16 of us in total.

After everyone has washed up and cleared away (we don't do any as we cook) we sit in a circle and open presents. We open one at a time so everyone can see what others have got. This takes around 3 or 4 hours!

We then play games until about 1am stopping to lay out buffet food.

The tv is never turned on on Christmas Day and never has been.

About 1.30am or a bit later family all go home.

Me and DH have our own Christmas dinner on New Years Day and open each other's presents then

CherryPavlova · 22/12/2019 19:21

crosser62 · 22/12/2019 19:40

Just another day but with presents, mess, loads of recycling and a fancy Sunday dinner.

I watch the kids open presents, eat copious amounts of chocolate while dh does all the cooking and cleaning.
Fil & bil Bob in for a cuppa and to bring kids presents, only for an hour though.
I sit on the sofa just watching it all.

While I’m grateful that I have been given the day/night shift off I am just too tired to be bothered with any of it.

listsandbudgets · 22/12/2019 19:41

For the first time ever we are spending Christmas at home just me, DP and DCs.

I.think we are aiming for

Up early with DCs fir stockings (.which will contain mini boxes of cereal in hope they'll make their own first breakfast)

Cooked breakfast about 8.30 ( not exactly sure what yet)

Gentle playing with stocking stuff / cooking/ drinking coffee/ getting dressed until 10.30ish.

Mid morning snacks( because we will be hungry again by then!!)

Presents

sitting about watching tv

Lunch about 2pmish

walk in the park or just round the block

left overs for tea

more relaxing

Having no one to please but ourselves seems amazing

relaxing evening and bed

trilbydoll · 22/12/2019 19:41

The last few years dh and I have woken up before the kids, one of them has finally woken up at 8ish and then woken up the other. DD1 is 6yo now so surely this must be the year she wakes at 4am?!

Our presents, then DH's family will arrive, more presents, lunch then a chilled out afternoon playing with toys and clearing up ready to do it all again on Boxing Day with my family.

Saltdoughmuncher · 22/12/2019 19:47

Wake up with DC and open presents. Eat selection boxes for breakfast.

11 ish head to my parents. Open presents from them (DC get a lot from them and they do their stockings too). Dinner around 1pm. Afternoon playing with their toys while snacking on nibbles. Home for 6:30pm as DC will be needing bed. Pjs on and then a drink with gavin and Stacy.

NutBiscuit · 22/12/2019 19:50

DS (6) will wake up at about 6:30. Straight downstairs for Santa presents and present from us. Out to parkrun for all of us at 9am. Back, grandparents come over for brunch and more presents at 10am. Leave to relatives house at 12:30, stay there for the rest of the day. Dinner at 2:30 ish, secret santa, bingo and snacks at 9pm ish

CakeAndGin · 22/12/2019 19:58

It’s me and DH.

So we’ll wake up about 8/9. We’re going to grab some frozen pastries tomorrow and we’ll pop those in the oven for breakfast and then open the Buck’s Fizz. Open presents in our PJs. Get dressed and then call our family (my mum and grandad, my dad, my grandma, his mum and dad, his brother, his nan - so it takes a while). We will then probably walk the dog. When we get back from our dog walk, I’ll start cooking and aim to eat at 3 but it’s not the end of the world if it’s later. We’re having baked Camembert with figs for starter and duck for our main, which were very excited for as neither of us are big fans of turkey. While food is cooking, we’ll watch TV and continue drinking - bubbles until dinner is ready, then wine. Some time that evening the cheese board will come out. I’ll move on to the baileys and he’ll move onto the whiskey. We’ll argue about whether that’s my chocolate orange or his. Can’t wait!

lynsey91 · 22/12/2019 20:07

@ItsADirtyNappyLove we are recording Gavin and Stacey as we don't watch tv on Christmas Day in my family. Not sure when we will watch it

Numbersarefun · 22/12/2019 20:38

These are all lovely.
My brothers’ families and mine are all staying at my parents so we are all here for about 4/5 days over Christmas.
We’ll get up at 8ish and have stockings. Breakfast is usually help yourself and someone will put the turkey on (prepared the night before). They’ll be food prep, someone will walk the dog, carers will come in to get mum up. 10.30am some people to church (Dad does the music and has recruited some of us to be in the choir.)
Others will be cooking and setting the table, opening ‘the bar’ and getting snacks ready. Dinner might be ready by about 1.30, but no worries if not.
If we’re finished by 3, we will watch The Queen.
After that we open our presents - this could take a while!!
At some point we might put out a buffet tea and play games. Normally everyone is quite tired so earlyish bed.
Boxing Day lots of people will go for a walk. Always bubble and squeak for lunch, play games, maybe watch a film.
The only child we have is 8 so she will have lots of people to play with her; mine are 18, 22 and 24. Oldest DD’s boyfriend may join us on 28th.

Emmacb82 · 22/12/2019 21:11

Me, dh and ds3. Will probably be up by 7, watch ds open his stocking. Have breakfast and then do main present. Start preparing dinner as doing it for midday. Hubby will do most of the cooking.
After dinner, just chilling out, watching ds play with toys. I will have a nap as working the night.
Something light for tea.
Will head off for work at 7pm (paeds nurse).

Howmanysleepsnow · 22/12/2019 21:51

Bed 2am once ds6 has finally fallen asleep so I can fill stockings
Dh will wake at 5am and dc at 6am.
Stockings and Santa presents in our room, then coffee for dh and I while they play with new stuff.
Then tree presents to one another followed by breakfast (bacon butties, smoked salmon and scrambled egg on toast or selection box according to preference!)
DM and DF arrive around 10. More present giving, and make them breakfast.
Start dinner whilst everyone messes with new stuff and adults drink Buck’s Fizz.
Dinner around 2.30-3.
DF and DM leave soon after. Rest of the day spent relaxing/ eating chocolate/ watching Christmas movie/ napping.

runninguphills · 22/12/2019 22:02

I'm hoping the children don't get up too early.... They are 13,10,8

Stockings are at the top of the stairs, they get opened slowly in our bed. Then downstairs to see if Santa has been.

We take ages to open presents as we all take turns to pick one up, have a guess what it could be, then finally open. This is repeated until all gifts are open. Breakfast is usually chocolate during this marathon event. The children adore it.

Loads of family turn up for lunch, everyone heads to the pub for a drink and I have some quiet peace to get veggies on (everything prepped the day before). I'm not a pub type person so enjoy this quiet time.

Family leave about 7pm. Gavin and Stacey at 8!

FruityWidow · 22/12/2019 22:12

It's just DH and I at a hired cottage in the middle of nowhere. Starting with Bailey's coffee in bed whilst we open gifts. Eggs Benedict for breakfast and then we'll call the family to wish them all a happy Christmas. Then off for long walk round the mountains and come back for roast dinner late afternoon. Then lots of lounging by the fire playing cards with mulled cider and chocolates. Boxing day will be much of the same.

TheresWaldo · 22/12/2019 22:20

Dd 15, who is normally never up before lunchtime on a non-school day will be up, downstairs and opening her stocking by 7am. We will amble down shortly afterwards, make coffee, and when considered suitably awake, do presents. Afterwards, get showered and dressed, make breakfast - scrambled eggs and smoked salmon is the fave. Phone the family, then I potter in the kitchen listening to Junior Favourites and drinking fizzy wine. Dinner about 2/3 ish then we have a board game or 3 and watch xmas tv. Looking forward to Gavin and Stacey!

Bluedogyellowcat · 22/12/2019 22:23

Get up about 6, rush to get dressed, get in taxi at 6.30, drive to airport, go on holiday. Arrive on holiday, dress in summer clothes, go out for dinner and drink lots of wine. Perfect

hazeyjane · 22/12/2019 22:35

Up early, kids check out what Santa brought. Off to church and meet friends there. Call with my parents, home for dinner. Then hour drive to see in laws. Will get home eventually!! Oh for a lazy Christmas day but do appreciate so many family and friends.
