4kg ham

Kez200 · 22/12/2019 10:07

My husband has just bought home an amazing 4kg gammon. Its too big for my saucepans but will fit in my slow cooker. How long would you cook it in a SC for?

Ill finish it off with honey and mustard in the oven.

Or I could just do the whole process in the oven.

Any advice? I normally buy tiny ones.

No idea but if you give me your address I’ll come to help eat it.

Kez200 · 22/12/2019 12:26

Haha!

I know. It looks lush.

Unless you have loads of people coming round, can you freeze half of it, otherwise you'd probably get fed up with it before it's finished.

I cooked a 3.6 kg one in the slow cooker with come for 8 hours. Was lush Smile

Omg! Not with come! With coke 😬

Kez200 · 22/12/2019 13:13

I could freeze some but I've 6 to feed xmas eve, 8 boxing day. Plus my parents will take some home.

It probably makes sense to keep some but I fancy cooking a centre piece now Ive got the chance.

Ill do the slow cooker!

PMSL at cooked with come...that would smell interesting!!! 🤮

MitziK · 22/12/2019 13:44

Just leave it in the SC until Boxing Day you need it for something else.

It'll be fine.

inwood · 22/12/2019 14:25

12 hours on low, finish in the oven. Yum.

KittenVsXmastree · 22/12/2019 14:31

Soak in water overnight or bring to the boil first, or it will be massively salty.
Then ages in the slow cooker. I put brown sugar and cloves in. No liquid needed. 6-8 hrs for a smaller weight, so maybe 12 hrs???

You can always freeze the cooked ham if there are still too many left overs after all your visitors.

ProfYaffle · 22/12/2019 14:31

I've got one of a similar size, am planning on putting in the slow cooker about 7am Xmas eve. Will easily be ready by tea time.

Ham cooked in come Grin Grin

I do a big one on low for 8-10 hours. When a knife goes through with little resistance it’s good. Then glaze and roast in a hot oven to get the at crisped and delicious.

Not necessarily, most hams these days come pre-brined, check the label.

I cook mine for 30 minutes per 500g plus 30 minutes, so four and a half hours in total, then glaze.

My ham has just been delivered and is 5kg!

Kez200 · 22/12/2019 14:44

My plan. Thanks everyone.

Im going to start soaking tomorrow morning for 24 hours.

Then start SC cooking at 7. 00 on Tuesday morning on low.

Ill glaze it in oven at 18.00 on Tuesday evening for 30 minutes, ready for supper at 19.00.

Boxing Day ill serve it cold. There may be turkey left too but I only have a small turkey joint, so probably not much.

I have a nearly 5kg gammon joint to cook tomorrow, have always roasted in oven (covered in foil loosely) for around 5 hours at 160, then will take off the rind, score the fat, stud with cloves and cover with mustard and brown sugar. Back in oven for 30 mins.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 22/12/2019 17:26

When you take the rind off, lay it on a grill tray, whack it back into the oven and make tasty ham crackling : )

Kez200 · 22/12/2019 17:52

When do i take the bands holding it together off. Or don't i?

It was delicious! We have just over half left for Boxing Day.
