Do you pay for a music streaming service?

I don’t, I use Prime Music (free version). The choice isn’t great but it’s ok, especially as I only really listen to music during my commute. But this is going to change as I want to make time for music. I’ve got a new lovely wood-burning smoke in my dining room and that’s going to be my music room. I hear Santa is getting me a top-of-the-range bluetooth speaker too...

Is it worth paying a music subscription? Will the sound quality be better, as well as the choice? Which one do you recommend?

I’ve just got four months of amazon music unlimited for 99p. So far I’m impressed.

BacktoMA · 22/12/2019 07:45

Every service has a free (or very cheap) trial period, try turn all and see which you prefer. Spotify and amazon music are my favourite, Deezer my least favourite.

Not bought music since about 2017, wouldn't do anything else now, especially with the kids listening on their dots too, we have a family package. It means you can download and listen offline too.

I pay £10 per month for Spotify and think it’s great

I pay £10 a month for Apple Music. I’ve tried others but prefer Apple. DH prefers Deezer and pays for the family subscription so the dc use it as well.

Try them all out with a free trial and see which you prefer. Not sure there’s any difference in sound quality between them though.

£10 a month for Spotify premium. Every now and then in a cost cutting exercise I cancel it. I always end up resubscribing.

icecreamsundae32 · 22/12/2019 07:50

We have an iTunes family package think it's £15 a month - 4 of us listen to it on work/school commutes so it's not a bad deal and we listen to it through Alexa at home too.

JingleBelle27 · 22/12/2019 07:51

I pay £10 a month for Apple Music.

I like it, find it easy to use and I’ve never struggled to find a song I’m looking for on there (even some obscure cover versions).

DookofBust · 22/12/2019 07:52

I have an Apple Music family subscription at £15 a month. DD uses it far more than I do.

Sound quality depends on what you are listening on/wifi connection if you haven't downloaded it rather than the streaming service you use.

Digestive28 · 22/12/2019 07:52

I do. Justified it by selling all cds through music magpie...turns out they weren’t worth the hundreds I had spent on them over the years but still justified subscription to Spotify for a while and now can’t imagine being without it

TR888 · 22/12/2019 08:30

Thanks for your ideas! I've read online that the sound quality of the free music streaming services is much lower than the one you get in the paid-for subscription. Is that not right?

I love my Spotify Premium. I get it included as an entertainment pack with Vodafone on though

MoltoAgitato · 22/12/2019 08:47

I use Google Play Music fo £9.99 per month. Also includes some YouTube perks. Wouldn’t be without it, I listen to it at work.

Tahitiitsamagicalplace · 22/12/2019 08:53

I use Google play music for the whole family for £15 a month. It's really good. You can get YouTube music too, which I've just discovered and it's FAB.

BettysLeftTentacle · 22/12/2019 08:58

I’ve used Spotify for years but recently switched to a family subscription of Apple Music. I prefer Spotify I think but I like that Apple connects to my car easily, I can see what my DD is listening to and filter out anything with explicit lyrics etc. I also like that you can search by lyric which is nifty when you’re a person that always has ear worms!!

BloodyDrasticInnit · 22/12/2019 09:00

£10 for Spotify.

I have specific tastes and I found Amazon music didn't have a lot of the bands I searched for.

I love Spotify.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 22/12/2019 09:04

Spotify premium, £10 a month. I love it as I walk to work (40 minutes each way) and I listen to music all the time.

Rainbowhairdontcare · 22/12/2019 09:08

Hello! I work in an online music distribution company. Yes, free accounts have lower sound at. Libraries are for the most part the same in all services. Tidal is the only one that has true HF sound

Popadoodledoooo · 22/12/2019 09:11

Spotify Premium here.

You’ve just reminded me I got a free subscription with something I bought at curry’s so will sort out a new account now. Save myself £10 a month for a while. Thanks!

PlaymobilPirate · 22/12/2019 09:14

Can someone explain for a tech novice how it works?

We have Amazon Prime and Alexas at home and it's great.

Whst do you all use on your train commute or in the car? I never bother as assumed it will use my mobile data up??

nitgel · 22/12/2019 09:17

I still buy cdsGrin

AlexaC · 22/12/2019 09:19

Playmobil You can download tracks from your Amazon music library music to your phone, that means you don't use your mobile data streaming tracks. There's an option in the app to make it offline, so it will only show downloaded tracks and play those.

Popadoodledoooo · 22/12/2019 09:27

Sharing this for anyone who might find it useful. Check to make sure you’ve not got one if you’ve bought any of the qualifying items or might be worth even buying a cheap game for the £60 Spotify freebie! I bought two Nintendo Switch games and got this.

Do you pay for a music streaming service?
SaskiaRembrandt · 22/12/2019 09:28

I have Spotify, with a premium account I think the streaming quality is better, you can listen offline and you don't get adverts in between tracks. There are also podcasts.

Rainallnight · 22/12/2019 09:30

I have paid-for Spotify and I think it’s well worth it.

(Though I do miss tapes and vinyl Smile. And I feel a bit guilty about all the artists making less money now from streaming services).

homemadecommunistrussia · 22/12/2019 09:35

No, I buy cds too
It would be daft to spend a fiver a month or whatever for 100s of 1000s of tracks and then listen to may 500 of them. As well as having to keep paying for it and never owning the music.
I stream tv and films, but if it's something I really like and will watch again I buy the dvd.
