LEGO - what can dh and teen dd do with a huge box of bricks?

dd17 and dh still love making things out of lego, but as dd gets older the kits are too expensive. I am clearing out a cupboard and have found an enormous box of lego. Is there anything on the internet which might give instructions on how to make something cool with a lot of random bricks?

I love using Lego to make pictures. Google Lego flat art and you’ll see what I mean. That sounds like a good project for the random bits.

Sort them how? Into colours?

Dd did spend part of her summer after GCSES remaking Hogwarts which looked painful enough to me but she enjoyed it!

DS has tonnes of Lego and rarely makes the original models. He prefers to make stuff up. Things he has made in the past includes vehicles, spaceships, moon bases, catapults, a mountain with a cave, a village. They just need to use their imagination!

There's a website called Rebrickable where you can put in what kits you have and it will suggest other things you can build with them. You might have to do a bit of substitution with random bricks but it might give you ideas at least.

They hate using their imagination Grin they like following instructions

A bit of a tangent here, but earlier someone said sort them first, which can feel daunting if you have a lot of pieces. I found organising and storing them according to brickarchitect a useful way of doing it. It gives a good way of storing/organising according to the size of the collection. If you have a large collection in one huge box you can’t see the wood for the trees, so organising into plates, tiles, bricks, SNOT (studs not on top), technic etc. will allow you to see what you’ve got.
Did you keep the instructions for any of the models?
Sounds like fun though. Good luck to them!
