HELP! Melted cuddly toy on log burner glass!

Bellabelloo · 21/12/2019 11:14

My toddler managed to stick his brand new cuddly toy to the glass of our log burner yesterday and there's a big, melted splodge! I have tried log burner cleaner, nail varnish remover and sodium bicarbonate but it's not shifting. Does anyone know of any magic solutions? Thanks!

Think the only think that would work would be one of those scrapers for a ceramic hob. You get them from Hardware stores to scrape difficult stuff stuck to the glass hob. It would allow you to scrape the glass without damaging it. Good luck x

Damp newspaper dipped in ash rubbed on the glass normally cleans it well. Although this sounds worse than that :/ maybe like pp said something for a delicate hob? Have you heard of the pink stuff? It's brill, gets rid of anything I've tried. Maybe that would work.

You might need to try heating / remelting the splodge and scraping it off then

BaronessBomburst · 21/12/2019 11:23

If it melted on, you might have to melt it off again. Try newspaper when the glass is hot and wear oven gloves.

I'll be that person: why was your toddler anywhere near a hot log burner?

MitziK · 21/12/2019 11:28

Don't heat it back up now there's nail varnish remover residue on it.

It's too much of a risk for a good while yet, because of fumes.

Ash really is the best thing to clean without scratching - add soap and a little hot water and take your time over it.

And yes, I'll second the poster above me - did you not have a fireguard? This is what they're for, not just to prevent physical contact, but to protect from 'things' touching it.

mrssoap · 21/12/2019 11:37

@TheDoctorDances 👍 indeed!

I don't think you'll get that off. We managed to get melted sock fibres off gently using a scourer after DB warmed his feet against the glass, but that was barely anything and this sound much worse.

We cracked the glass not long ago and bought a replacement for £20 online. DH watched a video on YouTube which showed how to take the door off and unscrew the little corner plates to remove the broken glass. It was really simple.

And get a fire guard!

Bellabelloo · 21/12/2019 12:40

Thank you.

Yes, we have a fire guard. He put his teddy down it. The only bit above the fire guard doesn't heat up. It was all safe!

Have some of the pink stuff. Will try that. And then try lighting another fire if that doesn't work!

Use a glass scraper.
I brushed against the glass wearing a fleece top once and the scraper was the only thing which removed the remaining splodge.

Bellabelloo · 21/12/2019 15:51

@beachcomber70 Ordered! Thanks! Nothing else has worked. Dammit!

I posted almost exactly same thing last year at this time. I went and bought a razor blade scraper and got it almost all off - was the only thing that worked

Bellabelloo · 04/01/2020 22:53

The scraper worked! Thanks. I was worried it would scratch the glass. But it is good as new.
