Ring Doorbell

Can anyone let me know what you think of your ring doorbell and which one it is.

I will be installing one before I go away for Christmas and have read that the original Ring is more robust than the Ring 2.

Also, did you buy the ding dong bit to plug in inside (can't think of the word to use!) or do you rely on tech.

Any other brands too - doesn't have to be Ring. I can buy Ring at Argos or Screwfix locally but could get another brand if it is available on Prime for delivery on Monday.

@TheShoeLady we found an 'X' drawn on the wall next to our front door and back door as well as sellotape over the locks (I think to see if we used our keys perhaps). Theres been a lot of burglaries near me lately and 101 confirmed it was very likely that my house had been "marked".

I'm also going away for Christmas so I feel much better having this camera now!

We have a Ring 2 doorbell, plus chime plus other Ring cameras around our property, some are batteries one is on a solar charge due to height.

They just get stolen from people's doors round here Ring will replace any stolen Ring doorbell free of charge.

The battery life depends on how often it is triggered, can be triggered by cats, foxes, trees swaying a bit more than normal. We have an extra battery that we have charged up. The screen will tell you visually that the battery is running low so you can swap it out.

Everything you need to install the Ring Doorbell comes in the box from the drill bit to the screwdrivers. We have had it for 2 years +. We love it.

I checked out some of the articles about Ring and their very lax data usage/security before making a decision. A quick google of Ring and data finds them.

I decided not to get one.

That’s really interesting Moon because I have always avoided Alexa etc for that very reason.

I wanted it for something specific that I won’t go into on here but I have changed the barrels in my locks today for Yale’s most secure barrel (whoever knew it was so easy!) so, as of three hours ago feel less like I need to be able to see who is at my front door.

I might think about just getting my burglar alarm serviced instead for now while I look into it a bit more.

Having just read that Ring is now owned by Amazon means I am less inclined.

That’s terrifying goldleaftree Shock

Glad you feel a bit more protected now though. Make sure you take any valuables with you or lock them away just in case.

There’s been loads of burglaries round here too, and as a single parent I really worry about security. There’s only a couple of things I’d be devastated to lose and I hide them well when we go away.

A friend who works for a cloud data security company alerted me to it. Said he wouldn't touch one with barge pole. I was a bit disappointed TBH as love the idea but after a bit of research it made me uncomfortable. I feel the same about Alexa, husband loves it, I turn it off. Again, cases in America have shown Alexa does listen all the time and it does record you too....

DookofBust · 21/12/2019 23:11

I know about Alexa in the US and being used in a murder case 😳 when it wasn’t meant to be on, evidence ‘found’ in the cloud.

That’s one of the reasons I have avoided it Moon, I have got four Marshall speakers that play music via AirPlay throughout the house without anything listening in for a voice command and a Sound Bar that does AirPlay. Honestly, chosen because they had nothing to do with the likes of Alexa et al.

Siri isn’t activated on any of my tech either.

Yes it’s disappointing!

We have the ring doorbell at the front and the ring security light at the back of the house.

The chime is great because our utility is at the bottom of the garden and if I leave the back door open I can hear the doorbell from down there.

We've hard wired the back light because foxes kept setting it off and the battery got low really quickly.

BillyAndTheSillies · 21/12/2019 23:43

We are also tempted to hardwire our front door bell. PIL's car was stolen off their drive and the thieves used a WiFi jammer to stop the ring recording. Absolutely no footage from the second they pulled up in a getaway car to about 6 hours later.
