These are mine:
You will be treated differently depending on what car you drive (having passed in my 30’s people see my banger of a tiny hatchback and treat me far worse on the roads than when I’m driving dh’s estate)

2: a tractor that slows down and indicates right is telling you it’s safe to overtake them.

3: playing rock anthems so loudly the static kicks in is a very sad look for a mum on a school run and cars and not sound proof to the outside world. (I am the sad twat in question here!).

Please add your own Grin

littlefrog yes!! I’m not one to raise my voice at my children but heaven forbid if they try and tell me a very long story from school when I’m trying to reverse parkGrin

If you're shit at parking, then practice somewhere quiet and until you can don't park in the busiest/ main lane of car parks. Nobody wants to sit for 10 minutes watching your 73 point manoeuvre as you attempt to get your aygo into/ out of a space big enough for a bus.

If you drive slowly, don't pull out and cut people up when you will then be holding them up with your shit driving.

Likewise if you drive a 1ltr, be aware of the fact other cars have more power. So don't race out from a giveaway line in front of cars on/ approaching a windy, hilly nsl country road so they all have to wait 3 weeks for your ride on mower to pick up speed again every time you slow for a corner or go up hill. Even if you're a very competent driver and consider your vehicle nippy because you can pull out quickly from a stop, it really isn't when it comes to accelerating uphill, or when you're already doing 30.

It's courteous in heavy traffic to allow those waiting in side roads etc to filter out one at a time. It's rude as fuck to the traffic behind you to sit and let every fucker out. And if the lights are on green in front of you and you decide to randomly stop and let everyone out, you are a cunt.

If you're shit at reversing but think a pretend 4x4 gives you right of way on narrow country roads, there's no need to get out and shriek at the other driver that has refused to reverse 1/4 mile round a corner. I can assure you they knew full well their taste in music wasn't family friendly, but unfortunately had to turn it up loudly to drown you out. I can assure you their parents weren't at all ashamed and were highly amused that certain lyrics suddenly equipped you with the ability to reverse 10'.

Nillynally agree shotgun rules!

Local 'only park on left hand side near the school' etiquette although a dad in eldest's class sticks to this rule even if a car has parked on the right hand side

The number of goes you have at reverse parking trebles when somebody has stopped to let you do it. Six fold if it's a police car.

anxioussue · 21/12/2019 23:25

They’ve been required on all car models approved in the EU after 7 February 2011.

My six year old car doesn't have them.

  1. When there is a deep pot-hole in the road Outside your house, park directly opposite it so nobody else can get past without going into the hole. If the warning cone in the hole spoils your view, be sure to remove it tidily into the nearest hedgerow.
  1. A pothole full of water looks like a puddle. (See 1.)
  1. Clearing your windscreen of frost is optional before 8am. For snow, clearing remains optional all day. Snow on your car roof will either stay put (and act as extra insulation) or gracefully slide off, creating a pleasing cloud of ice crystals as it hits the ground.
  1. Eat more carrots so you can easily see pedestrians without reflective clothing and cyclists without lights.
SpoonBlender · 22/12/2019 00:01

@anxioussue The key part is "approved after 7 feb 2011". Car models tend to last two or more years before they change enough to need a new approval round, your model could easily have been approved in say 2009.

Four wheel drive means you can spin your wheels as fast as you like on snow, and be very surprised that you're going sideways or backwards down the hill. Always entertaining round here when the roads are white, as long as you're not parked anywhere near them.

A real one for the upcoming weather: Have some premixed window wash refill in your car, once the air temp gets to zero any road spray will film up your window horribly. If you run out of window wash you're buggered.

sashh · 22/12/2019 05:30

Just tell me what do you see in the rear view or other mirrors (outside of lane changing/exiting/entering the motorway, that is of any use to you?

Blue flashing lights, green flashing lights. Motorbikes. Lorry where the driver is looking at sat nav, a film or a map mand hasn't noticed the traffic ahead is stopped.

Oh and if someone is tailgating, add their stopping distance onto your own.

I also have a personal rule, and I know this isn't possible for everyone, I always make allowances for 'working' vehicles, I wait for busses to pull out, make space for a truck overtaking me to pull in, let lorries out of junctions.

I'm not going to be in trouble for being 5 mins late to get my nails done, and I remember what it was like to travel by bus.

DookofBust · 22/12/2019 06:01

When joining a motorway/dual carriageway you do not have right of way! Plan how you will join without making the car already in the left hand lane have to brake, move over (isn’t always possible) or generally have to avoid you.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 22/12/2019 06:26

If I cyclist waves me past and I can’t see, I will most definitely not overtake them. I don’t care how helpful you think you’re being.

I am usually a very generous driver and will let people out but do not try to edge out before I’ve offered or by pretending you can’t see me. I will leave a hair’s width between me and the car in front.

I was driving with two friends and I let a bus out after it had stopped at a bus stop. Friend A: You’re being very nice letting the bus go... Me: Hmm Friend B: She’s not being nice. She’s following the Highway Code.

Jojo19834 · 22/12/2019 06:48

@DookofBust similarly if you are on the motorway, alone in the left hand lane approaching a slip lane, consider moving over to allow on coming traffic to merge. It is sometimes possible to change lanes

There’s a new unwritten rule that I have noticed (also mentioned above) - it’s ok to use the left hand lane of a roundabout to go all the way round if you are indicating. No it bloody isn’t unless in the rare situation the road is designed and marked to do this. Because you don’t want to queue in the right hand lane is not a defensible insurance accident reason FYI (I look in my blind spot so will hopefully not get caught by this but many many people do not know what a blind spot is or how to locate it)

DookofBust · 22/12/2019 07:50

Yes, that is definitely another one jojo but I seem to encounter the first one I posted much more often than the second one.

I think motorway driving should be a compulsory part of the test ... I do a lot of motorway driving.

ivykaty44 · 22/12/2019 07:54

If you drive passed the space in a carpark and don’t use your indicator I’m unlike to know you want to reverse into the space...that’s why I’m now behind you blocking your manoeuvre 🤣

ivykaty44 · 22/12/2019 07:58

@Jojo19834 consider moving over to allow on coming traffic to merge. It is sometimes possible to change lanes you should stay in the left lane unless overtaking... @Twospaniels explained this earlier

Unescorted · 22/12/2019 07:59

If you are on a country road and have accumulated a long line of cars behind you because you break for every corner and oncoming car do not speed up on the straight sections.

TulipCat · 22/12/2019 08:04

People driving down my road seem to have adopted the rule that a 20mph speed limit actually means 30mph is perfectly fine!

Bunnybigears · 22/12/2019 08:11

The more expensive the car the less likely they are to be fitted with indicators.

Some people think using the far left hand lane to turn right at a roundabout is acceptable.

Some days you will have accidentally turned on your cars invisibility setting, you will notice this as everybody will drive as if you arent there.

SnorkMaiden81 · 22/12/2019 08:11

When you hit a massive flood of water, especially on the motorway, don't touch your brakes.

ColleysMill · 22/12/2019 08:17

Height restrictions on multistory carparks are there for a reason. If your vehicle is quite large (or a van) you really need to know its height. And if you have only a few cms off the max height it may be wise to be cautious.

Ofcourse you can chance it but potentially you could end up like the chap I saw yesterday who got stuck in such a car park. The scrapping of the ceiling of the car park on top of the otherwise immaculate van/7 seater was painful for us all. Especially when the only way to become unstuck was to reverse and rescrape the top of the vehicle.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 22/12/2019 08:23

In the county of Essex, white transit vans always have right of way, even if it's your right of way.

If you mistakenly assume that they are going to obey the Highway Code, they will cut you up and mouth 'stupid bitch' at you through the windscreen...

Drivers need to stop this

RedRec · 22/12/2019 08:27

Some cracking advice here... Do not look behind you! Apart from 1% of the time... Think I will pass on that pearl of wisdom, thanks.

BeingATwatItsABingThing If I cyclist waves me past and I can’t see, I will most definitely not overtake them. I don’t care how helpful you think you’re being.

YY, loads of cyclists use the roads around me at weekends - they get quite animated when I ignore their wave-aheads on the bendy roads. No thanks, I can't see and the defense "Well this guy thought it was OK" is not going to stand up anywhere.

Also as the driver of a small car - Don't slow down on a slip lane onto a fast road PLEASE! You might have incredible acceleration but I don't and when you suddenly break then fire ahead, I'm screwed because I'll never have the room to get up to 60,
