Before I suggest one as a gift for dd2 (who is already being given an Alexa by me).

Tia :)

Not the normal Alexa or dot. I don't know about the visual one though or any other new types they might have. We have a dot in most rooms but I've bought dh a good quality waterproof, portable, bluetooth speaker for Christmas so we can use it in the bathroom or garden.

sirmione16 · 20/12/2019 10:50

Not to my knowledge, but it can play any song you want practically so no need to hook up a music device

lucysmam · 20/12/2019 10:52

Do you need a subscription to do that though @sirmione16? She is quite into musicals atm & has loads of soundtracks on her phone so I thought a speaker would be good if Alexa (dot, I think) doesn't do it.

I use it as a Bluetooth speaker for my phone- if that's what you mean?

TheDuckSaysMoo · 20/12/2019 10:53

This one: Anker [Upgraded] SoundCore 2... www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01MTB55WH?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

knocknockgryffindor · 20/12/2019 10:53

You can play music through Spotify for example and it comes out through the speaker

Aposterhasnoname · 20/12/2019 10:55

Not sure why people ard saying no unless I’m misunderstanding what you mean by Bluetooth speaker. You most certainly can connect to a dot and play music via Bluetooth. I’m doing it as we speak.

Aposterhasnoname · 20/12/2019 10:57

Just seen your second post. A dot will allow her to play the music on her phone via Bluetooth.

TakeMeToYourLiar · 20/12/2019 10:58

Yes you definitely can

TheDuckSaysMoo · 20/12/2019 10:58

How did i not know this. Wikihow has all the instructions. This is a game changer! I do still need the one for dh for the bathroom and garden though. Thanks Aposter

Jins · 20/12/2019 10:59

Yes it can be used as a Bluetooth speaker and we use it quite often

I think it’s more commonly used to Bluetooth to a better speaker which is why there’s confusion but Bluetooth goes both ways

ParadiseLaundry · 20/12/2019 11:12

Wow, I didn't know this! I bought an Echo Dot in the Black Friday sale and I'm so impressed at what you can do with it.

I only just found out you can control your Firestick via Alexa and tell her to play show. Absolutely game changer when you're stuck under a sleeping baby!

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 20/12/2019 11:18

I had an Anker Soundcore 2, until it was nicked by the fitters. Fantastic bit of kit, it would make the HGV cab vibrate, or fill the back garden.

TheDuckSaysMoo · 20/12/2019 11:50

Disgrace - I was dreading it being awful so that's great to know. Thanks.

TheDuckSaysMoo · 20/12/2019 12:45

Yeeha! I've got my phone blue toothed up to Alexa and can play my favourite podcasts.

lucysmam · 20/12/2019 14:40

Hmmm; I need to find myself some instructions in that case! And get my festive thinking cap on for something else to get her Xmas Smile

You definitely can Bluetooth your phone to Alexa (Echo and Dot). We do it all the time. We also stream music via Spotify on ours.

My kids like asking her to tell jokes. She's also good for the weather, and a cooking timer when your hands are dirty from cooking.

FenceFuckery · 20/12/2019 16:45

You could get her a Sonos One. Amazing speaker that has Alexs in it

marvelousways · 20/12/2019 18:07

definitely. Fellow musical lover here, currenlty listening to Dear Evan Hansen on my alexa dot (should say maybe that the echo has better sound quality than the dot, but both are fine.)

TakeMeToYourLiar · 21/12/2019 05:58

You just turn blue tooth on on your phone and say "Alexa connect to my phone"

First time she puts something on the app to show you how to pair it

lucysmam · 21/12/2019 14:11

@marvelousways I bought three of the dots when they were £22 each...no more shouting up the stairs only to be asked "what did you say?", for me Grin. The being able to play music through it is a bonus now I know you can do it! I was half considering suggesting a small, cheap ish, cd player but not a clue where one would go; this means no extra room taken up really & she can play what she likes from her phone

I might suggest a book from her lengthy "to read" list instead of a speaker now. There is always room on the bookshelf!
