Hi! My partner loves Iain M Banks novels. I would really like to find a sci-fi book by a different author that he would enjoy. Does anybody have any recommendations please? It is not a genre that I enjoy, so find choosing really difficult. TIA

Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie - only read this one which is the first of a series, but quite Banksian.

Light by M John Harrison (who I think was possibly doing Iain M Banks before Iain M Banks!)

Anything by Haruki Murikami, lots of his books are linked so you’d need to get some in the right order. But his books are incredible.

I'd try Ursula Le Guin.

Try John Scalzi - you could start with his recent trilogy, book 1 is The Collapsing Empire , book 3 comes out next year.

I like Iain M Banks, and Iain Banks for that matter. Not exactly the same genre but couple of my other favourites are Neal Stephenson (maybe try Diamond Age or Cryptonomicon), and David Mitchell (try Cloud Atlas or The Bone Clocks)

Try Dan Simmons, esp. his two Hyperion novels. Excellent stuff if you like your SF more literary and ambitious.

HoldMyLobster · 20/12/2019 13:27

Alastair Reynolds especially the Revelation Space books.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 20/12/2019 13:42

James Corey, the Expanse.

AShaveAndAHarecutHalfPrice · 20/12/2019 13:43

Christopher brookmyre maybe

GrouchyKiwi · 20/12/2019 13:47

Agree with James Corey, Ursula LeGuin and Dan Simmons.

My husband loves the above, and also enjoys Hannu Rajaniemi and Cixin Liu.

I love Iain M Banks also, and I got some great suggestions on mumsnet last year when I asked for recommendations. Here are mine:

Ancillary Justice (a series) - Ann Leckie
Three Body Problem - Liu Cixin (also a series)
Margaret Attwood's sci fi (e.g. Oryx and Crake series)

SpoonBlender · 20/12/2019 14:25

Seconding Alastair Reynolds, Ann Leckie, Lui Cixin, Hannu Rajaniemi.

I'll add Charles Stross, William Gibson, Neal Asher, Neal Stephenson, Ken MacCleod. Check his bookshelves first though, he may well already have them.

Disagree hugely with Dan Simmons, the first two Hyperion books were great but he descended into weirdass American rightwing nuttery after those. Avoid.

Really? Pls don't ruin Dan Simmons for me :(

@bongsuhan I'm so sorry! Hyperion 3 and 4 were non-mental but only passable for story, so best to just stop with Fall of Hyperion (book 2) and pretend he never wrote any more.
