How old were you when you cleared your mortgage?

Inspired by two other threads (one on pensions, the other on mortgages), if you've cleared your mortgage, how old were you when you did so?

53 and dh 58. It was a great relief, and a source of much satisfaction when I went into the bank to change my address from the Belgian address to the UK one just after I'd moved back. The bloke in the bank asked if it was rented or mortgaged, and if the latter, how much. I had great delight in telling him it was owned outright; I felt quite grown up.

Fully offset at 38

Mumof1andacat · 20/12/2019 18:19

34 due to inheritance. Massive wait off our minds. Dh has now been able to leave a highly paid stressful job and now has something with less pay and less stress. Would not have been able to do that if it was not for the inheritance.

34 as someone died

dollybird · 20/12/2019 20:16

32 then we moved to a bigger house and paid that mortgage off this year, aged 44

transformandriseup · 20/12/2019 20:17

30 as we had an inheritance and we only had a flat. I now have a new mortgage on a larger property.

AngieBolen · 20/12/2019 20:27

The first time 41.

The second time I'll be 65.

Gibble1 · 20/12/2019 20:54

35 and DH was 36. Just by the skin of our teeth. Since then have had no pay rise and cost of living has got so high that we would be screwed if we still had the mortgage. Got a loan for our kitchen 2 years ago which finishes next year and then had to get a loan for a car last year as mine died completely kaput so those payments are equal to what our mortgage would have been and our kids are now older and therefore more expensive. Spent the last few months getting DD through her driving test and will have to start the same with DS next year so that uses up all our money.
I do tell people but not in a braggy way, they know I worked nights and didn’t sleep when the kids were younger.

49

TreesSandSea · 20/12/2019 20:58

1st one 38
Bought again, 2nd one will be paid off at 52

ChristmassySpice · 20/12/2019 21:00
  1. Mainly because I bought my first property at 21 and didn't want to keep adding on years or going above what I could afford. It's nice to be 48 and a lone parent of an 8 year old DD knowing i can work part time and do all of the school drop offs and pick ups. I could have gone for a much bigger house (and would love one) but I see so many elderly grandparents picking up kids from school. I always said to my Mum and Dad that my child was my responsibility. Bloody good job, as they both aren't too well now.
lifeisgoodagain · 20/12/2019 21:01

Should have been clearing it this summer but h left me, it all depends on wherever I downsize and where I move to (I'm getting the house)

MAFIL · 20/12/2019 21:02

50

UndomesticHousewife · 20/12/2019 21:07

I'm 44 dh is 47. We hope to pay it off this year if the work we're expecting comes in.
If it doesn't then with the overpayments it will be clear in 4 years. Without the overpayments there's 12 years left on the mortgage.

blueshoes · 20/12/2019 21:09

For me, first time 44, second time (with a mortgage double the first one), 54. We will then take out mortgages for the dcs ....

Dh would be 5 years younger.

Hoghgyni · 20/12/2019 21:14

39, due to sheer hard work rather than inheritance.

speakout · 20/12/2019 21:20

First time was 29.Second time I was 37.
Now 56, doubt I will clear this one, but a huge house, with very elderly mother, two young adult children, so having this amount of space and bedrooms won't be needed in 10 or even 5 years time, leaving enough equity to buy a smaller place outright.
So your question is not relevant.

loriat · 20/12/2019 21:41

I was 50, although DH is a good few years older than me.

Dowser · 20/12/2019 22:49

51
