It's such a sad story, but I'm a bit confused as to why she had to lie on the pavement for so long. If it was just a fractured foot, could someone not have got her into a car and taken her to A&E? Am I missing something?

There must be something more to it if no-one was able to get her in a car.....

AShaveAndAHarecutHalfPrice · 19/12/2019 21:08

Well, it says she was drifting in an out of consciousness so perhaps nobody knew at that time it wa a fractured foot only.

Pinkflipflop85 · 19/12/2019 21:17

I thought the exact same thing. Surely there must have been someone who could take her in a car?

So terribly sad.

LittleSweet · 19/12/2019 21:21

The report I read that she was a larger woman with health problems. I couldn't understand why people couldn't help her up. It's a result of the government's austerity measures. Her poor family. She had an 11 year old dd. She was only a year older than me. It's an absolute disgrace that she has died.

missyB1 · 19/12/2019 21:22

Well she had an injury that totally incapacitated her and there is mention of a weight problem. So it certainly wouldn’t be as easy as someone popping her in a car. She was also drifting in and out of consciousness, again that’s going to make it very difficult to get her up and into a car. Remember paramedics have the specialist equipment and training to do this.

The point is that in a first world Country this kind of tragedy should not be happening. We should be better than this.

"Well, it says she was drifting in an out of consciousness so perhaps nobody knew at that time it wa a fractured foot only."

Maybe that's the case.

Liability aside, I would never ever take a stranger in my car.
DH witnesses a car going off the road due to black ice, assisted the older man to the emergency department to be checked over. He had a hangman’s fracture to his neck, drs gave dh supreme shit. Meanwhile on the icy highway ambulance crews were searching the bush for the old fellow, thinking head injury wandered off.
Helping with more than just calling for help can be the wrong choice.

FixTheBone · 19/12/2019 21:33

Looking at the pictures - it seems she was moved enough to be able to get blankets and pillows under her...

What a tragic story.

Ginger1982 · 19/12/2019 22:42

@fallfallfall yeah I totally get that. I suppose I meant more a family member or a friend.

if she was drifting out of consciousness & had fallen on floor I would be worried about head or perhaps neck/back injury. She was obviously in a lot of pain (we don't know exactly what the damage in her foot was) & presumably moving her was not a n option itmay even be that they were advised by the 999 NOT to move her - we don't know - she may well have fallen out of the car & lost consciousness because of her heart problem - the horror is that the ambulance took so long

AutumnRose1 · 19/12/2019 23:32

Sounds feasible sadly

I know someone who waited a similar time after breaking his leg in two places, the bone sticking out at one point. So no one other than trained staff could move him.

It was about a five, six hour wait. Then even worse, it took three days to get the operation to sort it. This is about ten years ago.

Many concerned passers by wanted to help but only ambulance staff could move him.

It is horrendous.

furrymulesandPJs · 20/12/2019 02:10

Am not sure about this story. She had a broken foot; even if she was heavy, 2 or 3 people could have moved here and got her into a car?

Grandmi · 20/12/2019 02:22

I fell and dislocated my shoulder and broke my arm and there was absolutely no way I could have been moved and got me into a car . It took 3 hrs for an ambulance to come . Needed pain relief to move me .Very sad but am guessing this poor lady had health issues.

Angelw · 20/12/2019 02:50

Such a sad state of affairs Angry

furrymulesandPJs · 20/12/2019 03:04

Angelw It is, isn't it? Poor woman. I just cannot understand why no one got her into the car- a broken foot, not abroken back or head injury. Which makes me think there must be something more to the story? Probably not fake news, but I think something is being left out. Mind you, I know people can be cautious about moving someone after an injury. Seems strange though. Does highlight the tragedy of an ambulance taking so long to get there. Sadly, an all too usual occurrence.

Really am off to bed now, else I won't function tommorow. Goodnight everyone

GloGirl · 20/12/2019 07:18

A young family member fell from a height, unable to move, also 6 hour ambulance wait.

He had shattered his pelvis, needed hours of surgery and had also damaged his internal organs.

It's disgraceful and he was told after he complained that it was "very busy" and his complaint went no further.

I suspect that the call was initially categorised as broken leg so no rush. But even then a broken leg shouldn't take 6 hours to get an ambulance to attend.

wowfudge · 20/12/2019 07:27

The article states she had an irregular heartbeat and had suffered two mini strokes before this slip. We don't know whether anyone told the ambulance service her history also we don't know what caused her to slip. I agree though that a six hour wait for an ambulance for someone lying on the pavement like that is awful.

AutumnRose1 · 20/12/2019 11:17

pp saying someone could have taken her as it's a broken foot....

anyone doing that will not know if she has sustained any other injuries.

it is appalling that the wait for these injuries is so long, I agree. But I don't think it's easy for a good Samaritan to say "I'll take you in my car".
