Tooth extraction, foul taste....is this normal?!

LivinLaVidaLoki · 19/12/2019 20:18

Had a tooth removed on Tuesday morning. Upper mouth.
Have been caring for the wound as instructed by my dentist including regularly rinsing with salt water.
However, this morning when i woke up i felt like I'd swallowed something gunky and it tasted foul.
I was then left with a disgusting taste in my mouth all day. First thing before I'd brushed was so bad I couldn't eat breakfast as the taste was overwhelming.
I dont feel ill, I dont have a temperature and the pain is getting a lot better, but dear god this taste is revolting.
Admittedly it doesnt feel as bad as it did first thing but it's still really unpleasant.
Anyone else had this?
I called the dentist this morning, the receptionist said it doesnt sound like infection so see how I get on.

When I was 15, I had to have four teeth removed for braces. I still remember the aftertaste now which happened a few days later and lasted around a week to ten days. I thought they were infected but the dentist checked them and said they were healing nicely. He recommended I used corsidil to rinse them too. That helped (mask the taste!).

I hope the pain isn't too bad for you x

Maybe pop into a pharmacy? If it’s infected, it’ll look so and they might be able to give you something.

Pinkbonbon · 19/12/2019 20:22

They didn't offer antibiotics? I know they do after root canal work but maybe not for tooth extractions.

Maybe something foodwise just got caught in the gum pocket? Or its some sort of scab forming? I think if you get any other symptoms or notice the same thing happening a few more times then call them back. But I'd imagine it'll settle in a few days.

Antibiotics not needed after an extraction. It's probably some infection draining away, if it gets any worse go back to your dentist for a check and he can clean out the socket.

I had an oro-antral communication after a wisdom tooth extraction earlier this year - the taste was foul! I'd be back at the dentist, if I were you!

Janaih · 19/12/2019 22:17

It's normal according to NHS website. Keep swishing with saltwater. You could also try corsodyl mouthwash.

ClientListQueen · 19/12/2019 22:20

It could be dry socket - I had it, no severe pain bizarrely but the symptom was the taste/smell
I went back to the dentist and they packed it with the clove smelling stuff and the relief was instant

HairyFloppins · 19/12/2019 22:21

You might have a bit of rotten food in the socket.

I had a wisdom tooth out the other month and I had a horrible taste for a while. Carry on rinsing.

Bluerussian · 19/12/2019 22:23

Quite normal, stale blood etc. It will pass.

billy1966 · 19/12/2019 22:25

Could be a sign of the dreaded dry socket.
Are the rest of your teeth feeling a bit sore?
Is your jaw a bit sore?
Rinsing with a good mouth wash is very important.
Gargle with salt water too.
Check it out.
You don't want to be caught out over the holidays with this.

I had this when I experienced dry socket. However if you aren't in pain this is unlikely. The smell is most likely food that has gotten stuck in the hole. If this is the case, your dentist will need to clean it before it becomes infected and so that it can heal over.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 20/12/2019 06:26

Well, last night before bed I did a final rinse and like a string of gunk came out and stuck to the next tooth. I removed it, it smelled absolutely rancid for such a small piece of gunk.
I used a mirror to see the hole and I could see a clot (well a dark tissue-y spot). So just went to bed. Woke up this morning and the rancid taste has gone.
So fingers crossed it can start healing now......

Great👍

LivinLaVidaLoki · 21/12/2019 15:26

Now in day 4 and it just doesn't look like its healing at all. There was like a criss cross of quite hard white stuff in there yesterday and again that washed out when I rinsed with salt water today, I think I'd assumed that was the healing tissue or something as there was no crap taste, but now that's gone and it just looks the same as it did days ago.
I just keep telling myself that as the pain is still quite low (gum a bit tender to the touch and bit painful when I smile - but guessing that's just bruising or trauma following the extraction)
It just really doesnt seem to be healing at all. I think I'm going to have to try and get in the dentist on Monday (luckily its open) to check all is OK.

Day 4 is still early. Low level pain and soreness is normal. If you were getting an infection you would be most likely in real pain.
The rinsing is key with a good antibacterial rinse at least 4 times a day.
Gargle for a good two minutes.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 21/12/2019 15:50

@billy1966 can you use antibacterial mouthwash? I was just told salt water and to be honest the saltiness in my mouth is an unpleasant feeling.
I think I just worry as it always seems to be yellowy, though I think this can be normal healing tissue building from the bottom up. I rinse after eating and before bed, I eat on the other side of my mouth and I dont poke it with my tongue, so I just keep telling myself that as long as I have no fever or horrendous pain then it must be OK.
I do need to stop obsessively checking the hole though I think.....

The tooth that was removed was an upper pre molar. It had to be removed as it was broken and taken out in 3 parts, including using a drill so it felt pretty brutal at the time and because of the size of the tooth the extraction hole is pretty large.

Sounds very painful.
Try to keep your tongue from rooting!!

All I know is that when I had a tooth taken out last year, salt water was recommended but I was told Cortisol anti bacterial mouth wash 4 times a day.
I never had a problem.

Hope you feel better soon.

Asterisktheknackered · 21/12/2019 16:06

You can use corsydl mouthwash if you don't like the salty water but it might stain your teeth. It all sounds very normal and will take 3/4 weeks to heal properly!!

Mrsmorton · 21/12/2019 16:15

Try to leave it alone! Gentle salt rinses but don't kick the arse out of it. Stop looking at it, be guided by your symptoms, if it gets more painful after today then that that's not good. Otherwise, you've had minor surgery, give it time.

Also, antibiotics are almost never the answer to dental pain.

BlueCornsihPixie · 21/12/2019 16:36

It's only day 4. You had a surgical extraction, it's going to take a while to heal. It's still going to be sore on day 4! If you had a bruise it wouldn't even have started healing on day 4.

It sounds perfectly normal. If you had an infection you would have swelling that was getting worse. If you had a dry socket you would be in agony.

Your body is pretty good at healing itself, don't worry. Keep up with saltwater, bathing the socket In it for 2 minutes 4 times a day.

You have no excessive pain, no swelling thats getting worse, you don't need to go back to the dentist. Just wait for it to heal, even if it is taking a bit longer to heal than others there's nothing the dentist can do it's just a case of waiting for your body to do the work.
