I have just emerged from the Dark Ages- how great are freezers?

I am absolutely in love with M&S's frozen pain au chocolat for a lazy breakfast.

I am now ready to break into frozen veg. Which brand/shops have nice packs? I am convinced this will revolutionise my life!

I love soffritto mix, and waitrose do a nice mixed grilled med veg which is very handy. But my top tip is to bulk caramelise onions and freeze in small portions - saves lots of time and lets me bung everything in at the start when making soup or casseroles.

And don't forget frozen fruit - perfect for stirring into porridge or making fruit puddings or pancakes. I also mix it into yoghurt most evenings and overnight it defrosts in the fridge and releases lots of lovely juices into the yogurt in time for breakfast (delicious with granola!)

Not veg, but cheese and bread freeze well too. We used to get a whole brie in France on the way back from holidays and portion and freeze it when we got home.

Our local Farmers’ Market only happens once a month, so the freezer is v useful for loading up with rabbit, venison, pheasant, smoked salmon, artisan bread and home baked cheesecakes, to keep supplies of treats and goodies going until the next one!
I don’t freeze veg apart from peas, corn, broad beans and red cabbage, plus puréed spinach for curries. Most of the others are a bit nasty after defrosting and the texture is not as good as fresh ones.

I like frozen smoothie packs.
Frozen chopped onion
Frozen herbs
Frozen diced butternut squash
Frozen Portuguese custard tarts.

All from Tesco. I’m sure other supermarkets do similar.

Ocado do a range of French (I think) frozen staples which are brilliant - in particular the leeks and peppers. I often stir a few cubes of frozen spinach into stews and curries etc

I'm a big fan of frozen spinach. I use Sainsbury's and Morrisons, and find them much of a muchness.

Frozen chopped onions are very useful, but I've had better results chopping my own than buying ready-frozen, which weren't cut to the size I mostly use.

I also freeze milk (NOT cream – it's never the same afterwards), bread, cheese (goes crumbly, but perfectly edible).

Today's dinner is going to be defrosted spinach, topped with defrosted bulk-cooked dahl, baked in the oven with an egg in a hollow in the top.

Onions. Frozen onions. Amazing things.

Following as I've only ever found fine green beans a decent frozen veg. I'd love to find a decent broccoli and spinach. I've them frozen from ocado, waitrose, tesco and sainsburys.

How have you managed without a freezer???

ThinkingAboutBlondein2020 · 19/12/2019 17:00

We lived in walking distance of 3 supermarkets, had a tiny freezer and were obnoxiously healthy so (thank god) never were unable to go and get anything.

I'm definitely going to get the fruit and the spinach, that sounds great. And onions! Amazing!

Frozen little blocks of onion and ginger (you can get them separately or combined). So good for stir fries, curries etc.

Frozen peas are excellent and higher in vitamins than fresh. Unless you grow your own and eat at source which I do in the summer.

But surely the main reason for a freezer is to make your own meals and freeze.
