I need a huge fuck off saucepan

I need to cook roast potatoes for 6 on Christmas Day and don't have a pan big enough. I'm absolutely clueless about what size I need. Anyone got any recommendations.

Unless you have a newfangled method of roasting potatoes, why do you need to invest in a massive saucepan?? If you mean to par boil them, do them in batches if they won't fit in what you have available.

Use 2 pans Grin

I love the adjective 'fuck off'; it's my go-to favourite. Grin

I agree - use two pans!!!

TreeSwayer · 18/12/2019 18:20

Either use 2 pans or borrow one from a friend or neighbour. I have "family pans" which I use for batch cooking.

But also if you want a really crunchy roast potato you need to put baking soda into the pan of water. This video explains why it makes a crispy roastie spud, the science behind it. I can confirm the crunch, it is how we make them. For Christmas day skip the rosemary and garlic bit. Trial them now before Christmas day to see what you think.

Even my normal sized pans aren't really big enough to do too many at once...I'm not planning on using all 3 pans twice....

I use the bottom section of my steamer.

ShinyGiratina · 18/12/2019 18:35

I like Pro Cook for big pans. Not cheap, but good quality and last.

momoney1 · 18/12/2019 18:36

How many potatoes are you doing that two saucepans arent enough?!

sammi0805 · 18/12/2019 18:39

I saw some massive saucepans in Sainsburys and Asda the other day

MustardScreams · 18/12/2019 18:40

You can parboil potatoes the day before, leave them to cool and form a skin and shove in the fridge.

They roast up a trillion times better freshly boiled ones.

Marmite27 · 18/12/2019 18:40

DH has a massive one for soup from ikea.

Praiseyou · 18/12/2019 18:45

You need a stockpot.

Peony99 · 18/12/2019 18:46

Indian and Caribbean grocers sometimes do truly enormous pans.

But for 6 a large casserole would probably work?

WrongKindOfFace · 18/12/2019 18:50

Indian and Caribbean grocers sometimes do truly enormous pans.

This was going to be my suggestion. Also TK Maxx for reasonably priced huge pans, but not quite fuck off sized.

TheCrowFromBelow · 18/12/2019 18:51

I use a 6 litre soup pan for spuds for 9 - 10. 4.5 litres might do it.
Tip: don’t bring to boil with cold water. Otherwise the ones at the bottom are mash instead.
I make a lot of soup as well though, to be honest unless you are going to use the pans again I’d cook in batches.

Justmuddlingalong · 18/12/2019 18:53

Try a stockpot from an old fashioned hardware shop. That's where I got mine.

Sherloidbaisherloid · 18/12/2019 19:07

I’ve got a pressure cooker, I only use it really for making soup the pot is huge!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 18/12/2019 19:25

This is what a dd wanted for Christmas last year! She often has a lot of friends round.

I got her the John Lewis own brand stainless steel stockpot - it comes with a lifetime guarantee. Evidently fits the bill very well, works on her induction hob. You can easily cook enough rice, pasta or potatoes for a dozen or more people in it. Was £50 ish IIRC.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 18/12/2019 19:31

We have that stock pot GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER. It is fabulous. We got it as a wedding present 11 years ago and it is like new. Gets used weekly for stock and often for pasta and stuff.

Troels · 18/12/2019 19:52

McCains will make them for you, you won't need a pan that way, just a roasting dish thing for the oven.

MrsPear · 18/12/2019 20:14

You need a stock pot - it’s a taller slighter wider pot with lid. Sainsbury do them. They usually have two d handles to help lift them
