Husband has a huge lump and I'm terrified

Dh has a lump in his hip. And I'm secretly freaking out.

It has literally just appeared, he had a v thorough medical a month ago and it wasn't there.

It's big, about the length of my hand and I can move it about...it seems v big to be a lipoma. And it's come on so fast, although he has recently had bouts of sciatica and a sore back over the past fortnight.

He has an appointment with doctors, but unless he gets a definitive answer we could be looking at a stressed Christmas waiting for a referral.

I'm so worried, would love any ideas or reassurance.

Could it be an inguinal hernia ?

DumbFlagScum · 18/12/2019 07:18

Don't think it's that, AF, its a solid mass. Like a spongy oval egg. Or a foam rugby ball.

Spongy is good. Hard and fixed isn't. Very likely to be benign but get it checked out.

My DH had a sarcoma - it wasn't like you described.

From experience, save you worry for if you need it ie - not now.

My DH has one of those on his side. I forget the medical name but it's benign and not getting bigger. The GP said they are common and can appear quickly. As another person said, spongy is a good sign but you need to get it checked asap to be sure. Sending positive thoughts.

Lipomas can be huge! My dad had one on his belly, it was right next to his belly button. It wasnt there, then it was. It grew rapidly. Although he didnt get it checked until my mum had practically held a gun to his head all the way to the GP. He had it removed and it was the size of a tennis ball. Hes had a few more since then. Smaller ones. One on his chest, arm and leg.

Watch dr pimple popper. Shes sorted out some huge ones

DumbFlagScum · 18/12/2019 08:03

Ada, was it big? Was it a lipoma?

The size and speed of its appearance is what's bothering me. It. Feels. Rooted to a bone or a muscle

OP posts:
AdaFromYorkshire · 18/12/2019 08:24

Yes, I think so. It seems to be fixed to a rib but you can squish it and move it around a bit. Mostly DH ignores it as it doesn't cause any problems. But you need to get your DH's checked, if only for your peace of mind.

DumbFlagScum · 18/12/2019 08:45

Thanks Ada, I just feel better knowing that there are other big lipomas out there,

I feel as though this is one really, but everything I read keeps telling me that it is rare for them to be over 5cm...my husband is very tall and slim so its 1. Big, 2. V obvious

His appointment is on Saturday so I'll just shelve the worry for now.

@brightonroc

it really sounds like a hernia or something, not at all like a cancerous tumour.

magimedi · 18/12/2019 11:24

My very tall & slim OH had a lipoma bigger than 20cm on his neck. It had to be removed & drained - quick & easy op & he's been fine for about 10 years since.

Howmanysleepsnow · 18/12/2019 11:31

Not remotely the same but my dog had a lipoma that was longer and wider than my hand by about an inch...

Howmanysleepsnow · 18/12/2019 11:31

Not sure if that’s helpful or not! Sorry!

Horsemad · 18/12/2019 11:53

I had a lipoma, about the size of my hand, chicken fillet size. They can be pretty big.

DumbFlagScum · 18/12/2019 13:25

Thanks, I feel so much better now!!

I heard it’s good (generally speaking) if it’s a soft spot. Hard one that you cannot move isn’t good.

I went to the hospital twice to get a lump checked and was also so worried. Eventually they made an ultrasound of the lump and measured the exact size and did it again a few months later to see if it had grown. I didn’t and they think it has to do with underlying old scar tissue.

Remember OP that most lumps don’t mean cancer but it’s the first thought nearly everyone has so it’s perfectly explainable why you’re scared.

I hope you will have a nice worryfree Christmas after all Xmas Smile

brightonroc · 19/12/2019 07:23

@DumbFlagScum

He's doing ok - 13 years past first lump and 2 years past the second. He's just prone to them.

Leg is not great but he manages.

Seriously though - even the most knowledgable docs at the Marsden said it wouldn't be a tumour as they are SO rare. Even though his presented as one (hard and fixed)! - your husbands is even less likely to be something sinister.

You're more likely to win the lottery than get a sarcoma. We joke that it's our turn to win now :)

ChristmasVag · 19/12/2019 07:33

@brightonroc

Hes had 2 sarcomas? Blimey. Poor man, what a lot to go through.

Def. Your turn for the lottery!
