Northern Ireland nursing strike

wellhellohi · 17/12/2019 22:46

Tomorrow Northern Ireland nursing staff will, for the first time, leave their wards, theatres, clinics to strike for safe staffing levels and pay parity.

NHS staff in NI get paid significantly less than the rest of the UK but yet this action hasn't even made it onto national news. Without a sitting government it's going to be difficult to resolve.

It's a scary time for our health service. But unfortunately this is another example of how we are being left behind.

Please support the nurses.

They have my full support. Which union are they in?

wellhellohi · 17/12/2019 22:58

There are four unions striking tomorrow. RCN, UNISON, NIPSA and UNITE. That's why I'm shocked it wasn't in the national news. This is huge!

Thank you. You will understand how significant it is that the RCN called this action. The first time in their 103 year history.

It's being covered on the BBC.

TheFairyCaravan · 18/12/2019 06:57

Good for them! They've got my support.

hopeishere · 18/12/2019 07:14

It's on BBC this morning but they've got Matt Hancock on to talk about it for some reason. Hmm

missyB1 · 18/12/2019 07:19

Oh they gave my full support! I didn’t know about the strike but the Government will try and play it down, and the media are in their pockets anyway. I hope the nurses have more luck than our poor junior doctors did when they were striking, Jeremy Cunt screwed them over completely.
I will look for a link and share on my FB to try and raise awareness.

missyB1 · 18/12/2019 07:19

And I’m glad the RCN have finally woken up!

LostInTesco · 18/12/2019 07:24

Family member is 26 hours and counting into an NI a and e department (probably more, it was 26 hours last night when I left and they weren't expecting a bed for her)

The staff in the department were superb. Having seen a full 24 hours cycle in there, they were never anything less than working as hard as they can. There were queues of ambulances waiting to hand over admissions, there were people in chairs on drips and at one point more than 12 on trolleys in the corridors.

If I'm honest I have at times seen casualty dept where there seems to be a lack of urgency and you begin to feel frustrated but not at the Ulster the last few days. The staff are superb and I'm happy to support their strike. My young children were there and heard about it and I've explained it very clearly to them too 😊

bluebell94 · 18/12/2019 07:52

Fellow nurse, you have my full support Xmas Smile

wellhellohi · 18/12/2019 08:23

Glad to see it made the National news. Thank you for all the support.

Right behind them here in Wales. Go NI.

fedup21 · 18/12/2019 08:31

I hope the press are more supportive than they were with the junior doctor strikes, and in fact any of the teacher strikes.

How different is the pay for nurses in NI?

Stillfunny · 18/12/2019 08:40

It is in the news here in Republic .
How disgusting that this is necessary to get some recognition of the issues on the NI NHS service.
Especially when you consider the millions promised to the DUP to support Boris.

All hospital services seem to be suffering . It is crazy the way these seem to be the last to be funded . All of us , no matter what country will need health service at some point in our lives.

Truly , we should all be marching the streets in support of our health workers.

TravellingSpoon · 18/12/2019 10:37

Tou have my support.

TravellingSpoon · 18/12/2019 10:37

You Xmas Blush

rugbychick1 · 18/12/2019 11:03

Full support here from a nurse

patm99 · 18/12/2019 11:25

It is rediculous that it has been poorly reported in the rest of Britain. But it also seems that the nursing staff are poorly treated in NI. Good Luck from Scotland and I hope it is successful

JuniperBeer · 18/12/2019 11:26

Might be a stupid question but what happens during the strike? Do they cover it with agency nurses?
In support btw!

hopeishere · 18/12/2019 15:42

No @JuniperBeer there are derogations or special exclusions so they will have some staff there but a reduced number. There are also allied health out as well so social worker, ambulance staff, speech therapists etc.

JacobReesClunge · 18/12/2019 21:23

Don't blame them.

tazzy73 · 18/12/2019 22:27

Wellhellohi,
Best of luck from a nurse here in the republic.
We had to strike earlier in the year. It's on the news here. Hope you all get sorted.

Tazzy.
