Weekly shop!?

Who does this? I don't understand why anyone would ever bother anymore, when you can get groceries delivered to your kitchen. Yet on the rare occasions I go into big supermarkets, they're always rammed - why??

Stupid delivery slots
Won't deliver alcohol because we live (100m) outside their delivery area
I can choose my veg, not half rotten stuff
I can buy a large piece of meat, not just chops or packaged

We get a main shop on a Saturday morning which gets topped up during the week with perishables. Means you can see the produce/get the best dates/ see new items on sale

Waxonwaxoff0 · 17/12/2019 20:22

I do a weekly shop. I like to choose my own fruit, veg, and meat! And there's always something missing whenever I've done a home delivery, it's annoying.

There is only me and 6yo DS at home so it's not exactly a huge shop for me.

FruityWidow · 17/12/2019 20:23

Store cupboard stuff gets delivered but we go to the grocers, butchers and deli once a week for fresh produce.

JoJoSM2 · 17/12/2019 20:23

I like to go into a supermarket for a bit of inspiration and to get out of the house (sahm). When I get groceries delivered, I end up ordering very repetitive items.

Wavingwhiledrowning · 17/12/2019 20:27

DH was always adament that the weekly shop was essential so he could pick the fresh stuff himself. It was irksome because it took up a load of a weekend day and I was left trying to do all the house and children stuff on one of my rare days off.
Then the DCs got big enough to be really excited to go with him. Ha!
We switched to home delivery soon after that. Honestly, it's been a total game changer. So much more time together and because it remembers previous orders I don't have to think too hard either. We've literally never had any dodgy veg or meat, and if we weren't happy, we'd just refuse it.

Because Aldi don’t deliver, and we do the bulk of the shopping there.
Because I often pick up bits in different shops, so would have to pay/wait in for multiple times slots
Because the times I’ve used it, it’s felt like it’s taken just as much time as going to the shop.
Because I can go into a shop whenever it suits, not wait in for a specific time slot
Because I like to choose my own meat, fruit and veg, and know that I’ve got the best of the bunch
Because I begrudge paying the delivery cost, as it definitely doesn’t cost me that in fuel to get there

I like to choose my own fruit and veg; see what looks good. Wander round for new stuff. Browse the biscuits.
I quite like walking round the supermarket.

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 17/12/2019 20:31

Another one here who likes to actually see the meat and fruit and veg before choosing.

Plus I've always had food with really short shelf lives when I've had them delivered.

Because sometimes doing the weekly shop feels like a spa break (whizz round in 20 minutes, relax with a hot coffee and a cheese scone, in silence, for at least 30 minutes)

Because of the (quite frankly) ludicrous substitutions. No alternative to seeded bread? None?

Because I get bored ordering the same stuff week in week out, and browsing the aisles makes me think about different meals.

I can usually whizz round ASDA in less than 30 minutes on a Saturday morning while DD is at swimming so in reality it's not a problem.

pumpkinpie01 · 17/12/2019 20:41

I did an online shop once years ago found it so much faff never bothered again . We go shopping probably every 10 days and I get fruit from the weekly market in between shops . It's really no hassle.

WeirdPookah · 17/12/2019 20:41

Because they deliver sub-standard fruit and veg.
They break everything (yogurt and soup exploded over everything!)
They give stupid substitutions, like meat for vegetarian products.
Tins arrived wet and rusted and all dented.
Bread packed at bottoms of bags under those tins.

Reductions. Getting food with the maximum time until the expiration date, rather than food for the week all with use by dates of tomorrow. Being able to pick strawberries that are edible rather than already furry and blue on the underside. Not getting toilet cleaner put in a bag with cat food and then wondering why the kitty bisks are unusable. Not finding out at 10pm that the driver isn't going to get to you, so the entire order has been cancelled. Not having a charge set against your card in excess of what has been delivered and not getting it refunded for days. Knowing that when you pick up a joint of meat, it's going to cost you £8 and will make 4 good portions, rather than finding out they've delivered you one that will serve one old lady and her little dog - or an entire rugby team with enough left over for sandwiches. Not getting 4 fillets where one is 2 inches thick, one is 3/4", one is practically transparent and eight inches long and one is clearly the scraggy bit that normally gets chucked away. Not ordering a bottle of rose lemonade at £3 to have it substituted with £25 of Rose Champagne and charged for it. Being able to change your mind on the spot according to what looks good or is on offer.

Things like that, really.
