Laundry room essentials

Hi, I am about to start planning cupboards/storage in my laundry room. It will be to store extra kitchen supplies, laundry items and clothes waiting to be washed, ironed and put away,, shoe storage, washing machine etc. What are the most useful storage tips you have? What items/storage tips are essential? It's only a small area so maximising space is a must! I'm wanting to keep it as streamlined as possible so most storage will be in cupboards, both ground and wall hung. Many thanks

Are you putting in a dryer? I would, definitely. Can you take pictures of the space?

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 17/12/2019 18:35

A tall cupboard for vacuum and things like brushes and ironing board.

Pictures will help! I'll take some and figure out how to upload. I have a washer/dryer so one appliance and not integrated. I wondered about a pull out ironing board that folds away for a storage. I have a stand alone cupboard for that atm. One wall of storage would be quite shallow, but the other the depth of a washing machine. Plus shallow wall storage.

A Sheila maid ( or whatever they're called) - basically a drying rack that hangs from the ceiling. Then you can maximise space

I know what you mean! Saves me using the radiators!

A washing machine or dryer that doesn't bear the names Whirlpool, Hotpoint or Indesit.

Get a heated drying rack - quite expensive from Lakeland but amazing, I use mine for everything. It hangs from the wall so multitasks for drying things on it (I have it above a radiator so sometimes don’t even turn it on) and also hanging the ironing from it.
I am contemplating a second one I love it so much! When we did the electrics we had plugs put on the wall at the right height just for it!

I have a worktop over the washer and dryer, and above that two double cupboards for cleaning stuff.

Three big double hooks on the wall to hang stuff up that needs it (useful for bras too)

Shelves on the other wall for towels/bedding/blankets/ironing pile.

Would you want to do your ironing in the laundry room though? I like watching tv to relieve the boredom!

Is there a sink in there? I second an aired high up.

A rail of some sort to hang clothes/shirts on hangers. I use a shower curtain pole from ikea - It cost 5 quid and is brilliant.

Do a search for ‘small laundry room’ on Pinterest. Lots of fantastic ideas there.

Great ideas, thank you. Yes there is a sink in there ATM but it's quite big and has a draining board that currently holds my ironing. Thinking about the space though, I don't think there will be room to iron in it so I'll definitely need storage for that. I'll have a look on Pinterest too.

A small bin! For fluff, things from pockets, washing tablet wrappers etc. Annoyed me for months until I put one in!

AGnu · 18/12/2019 05:52

I'd have drawers with full-load size, removable bins for each type of wash we do. For us, I think we might need as many as 5 drawers - whites, lights, colours, delicates & towels. I fantasise about everyone bringing their washing down & sorting it & being able to see easily exactly which wash needs to go on. Atm, we only have space to separate into lights/darks & even that is "lights on the left, darks on the right" in the one box so things still get jumbled.

I have laundry room envy!

An over door shoe organiser to hang inside the cupboard is really useful, I find. Saves space and you can see all 20 or so pairs of shoes at once. That is if you don't have customised shoe storage system à la Carrie Bradshaw, of course!

We have some great Ikea shelves. White and lovely and solid, they come in lots of sizes and have lots of accessories. I'd love the space for more, especially the ones for hanging clothes on hangers.
