Books for a 6 year old girl to read by herself?

Dexter2402 · 17/12/2019 16:52

My daughter is currently in a Welsh language class so obviously comes home with Welsh reading books. She loves reading and I’m keen for her to read some books in English. Can anybody suggest some books (ideally in a set) that I can get for her to read by herself please? She has finished Songbirds level 6 but they were too easy for her. Thanks

At 6 to 7, my DD loved to read the 'Daisy and the Trouble With...' set by Kes Gray, she'd look forward to picking these from the library for example when we went. I also like the look of 'Miranda The Castaway' (not the early reader version) although would be too young for DD.

The fairy name books are good.
There is also a mouse school set.

KittenVsXmastree · 17/12/2019 17:25

We got a lot of mileage out of this set if books - not all are horrid Henry, despite the picture.
NB the book people went into administration today, but say they will continue to trade.

My 6yo likes the Rainbow Fairies books. There are easy reader ones which might be better depending of her reading level. She has also enjoyed Usbourne's illustrated fairy tales and Pierre the Maze Detective.

Echo Daisy Books
Holly Webb’s books on animal stuff
DD likes the “Brownies” fiction books (despite still being a Rainbow)
We’ve got horrid Henry books, but they’ve been confiscated, twice, as she started to act like HH, despite being generally lovely

My dd was on lemony snicket series, spider wick chronicle and ottoline books

GuyFawkesDay · 17/12/2019 21:26

The Twitches are lovely, about toy rabbit family and their owner who sees them come to life

Millie2013 · 17/12/2019 21:28

Oh and the Dick King-Smith “Sophie” books

TooMinty · 17/12/2019 21:29

My DS has been working his way through the Worst Witch series by Jill Murphy.

Rathkelter · 17/12/2019 21:30

The Worst Witch. I bought the whole set from Book People for around a tenner.

CompletelyRenounceSpandex · 17/12/2019 21:39

My dd loves the rainbow fairies, the worst witch series, the diary of a wimpy kid books and her absolute favourite are the tom gates books. Like a pp said, The Book People are excellent price and selection wise.

NobdieTheNob · 17/12/2019 21:41

My DD loved the Rainbow Fairies at that age. They have no literary merit whatsoever, but I was happy to go with anything that encouraged her to read.

NobdieTheNob · 17/12/2019 21:41

Agree re Book People, btw. Also charity shops/school fairs!

oobedobe · 17/12/2019 21:53

Mine is 7 but loves Geronimo Stilton - mostly the fantasy series, they are fairly challenging (for 6/7 yo) but good re-read value as they are colourful with lots of illustrations.

Also Worst Witch, Ivy and Bean, Judy Moody, Bad Kitty

Queenest · 17/12/2019 22:01

Mr Men/Miss
Faraway Tree
Amelia Jane

Queenest · 17/12/2019 22:01

Winnie the witch
Humphry the hamster

Sorry, I’m new to his site and only just worked out how to find the replies.
Thanks for all your suggestions, I’ll have a look for them now.

I loved Milly molly mandy at that age! Wow, that has taken me back. I remember poring over the little map of the village in the front of the books!

My DS loved the Daisy books. Also any Jeremy Strong books. Very silly and great for encouraging reading.
