Substitute for Aniseed?

Recipe with aniseed and kirsch in it. I don't like either and want to try the recipe with something else.

What would you use?

What’s the recipe for? That might help to suggest a good substitute.

Ridingthegravytrain · 17/12/2019 13:15

Depends what the recipe is making? Maybe something almondy instead?

Fennel ?

As pps say, largely depends on what kind of recipe it is but if it's say, a cake or biscuits, caraway seeds have a much milder flavour than anise. Kirsch you could swap for any other kind of booze as it doesn't have a huge amount of flavour and isn't sweet like cherry brandy... rum or cognac are quite christmassy

What is it? If you dont like two of the ingredients it seems a bit pointless!

concooktion · 17/12/2019 14:18

Biscuits! I know it's silly, this is purely because I feel like experimenting Grin

Recipe is
4 eggs
450g icing sugar
1 pinch salt
1.5 tbsp aniseed
1 tbsp kirsch
550g flour

I have gin, archers [ Shock that must be ancient! ] rum, Poire- Williams, and a mirabelle one.

Do you like other spices? I’d probably use mixed spice instead, or a mix of cinnamon and ginger.

I’d probably just leave the kirsch out.

SpoonBlender · 17/12/2019 14:21

... what you have there without aniseed and kirsch is plain biscuits.

You can make any other sort of biscuit out of this recipe. Do that.

IHaveBrilloHair · 17/12/2019 14:23

Make something else you dafty Xmas Grin

Feelingabitashamed · 17/12/2019 14:25

Oh yes, mixed spice and rum might be nice

SophiaLarsen · 17/12/2019 14:26

Use your Poire stuff and star anise or clove.

If you really cannot stand any anise flavour go for ground ginger

concooktion · 17/12/2019 14:36
Grin

Oooo DH would not be amused if I corrupt his favourite biscuits with clove Grin

Would calvados and clove work? Is it too sweet?
