When did pigs in blankets become a thing?

When I was growing up (in the 60's and 70's, east of Scotland) we had chipolatas and streaky bacon rolls but they were never wrapped together, they were cooked separately. Then suddenly they seemed to be wrapped together and called pigs in blankets. When did this transition happen? Was it always there and my family just missed the memo back in the day?

I asked my DM about this and she can't remember either. It was obviously a while back! Possibly in the 80s when I got married and started hosting Christmas dinner myself. I might need to go back to photos of past Christmas days and scrutinise what we had on our plates!

We called the sausages wrapped in bacon for most of my life. I only heard of pigs in blankets about 5 years ago

East of Scotland 70s we called them sausages in bacon. They had always always been overcooked and so it took me years and years till I cooked my own and discovered they were tasty!

They are and have been since the late sixties my favourite part of Christmas dinner. These days they are lucky to make it out of the kitchen if I'm making them. I make sure I'm always the one making them.
That and left over turkey and crisp sandwiches.

As a child of the 80s/90s we didn't have pigs in blankets until I was in my teens. We had chipolatas and back bacon on the plate separately. Which surprises me as my DM pretty much bought everything ready-made or frozen, so she mustn't have cottoned on to the packs of pigs in blankets until later Grin

70'/80's southerner child here. We've never had them. The sausages were cooked separately and the streaky bacon came off the top of the roast chicken or turkey halfway through (triggering an epic scavenger war between the three of us kids to get a piece before it was gone

This for me, too. Although since I’ve been cooking Christmas dinner myself (about 15 years now) I’ve made them and called them pigs in blankets. I can’t remember how I discovered them, but I’m so glad I did Grin.

I didn't come across them in real life until the 80s. My mum was a puritan in the kitchen and would have avoided such fanciness. I didn't taste garlic until I was an adult Grin

Last year Aldi did giant pigs in blankets. A good nine incher of sausage wrapped in bacon. So I wrapped them in puff pastry and stuck them in the oven, and that is how I won Boxing Day.

Lllot5 ye me too, my Dp is English and his family looked at me like I had an extra head the first time I mentioned them. They much prefer my name for them now though Xmas Grin

We did pigs in kilts?

EL2019 · 17/12/2019 20:22

I’ve got a children’s cookbook from 80s that has a pigs in blankets recipe.

Jamhandprints · 17/12/2019 20:30

We had chipolatas and crispy bacon from the top of the turkey. But I remember having "sausages wrapped in bacon" on my school christmas dinner (80s).

SheSnapsThenSheFarts · 17/12/2019 20:33

I never had them until I left home in 1991!

Chemenger · 20/12/2019 16:55

I have to share the horror of what was served at my work Christmas do. Sausage, bacon and pastry. Like misformed sausage rolls.

When did pigs in blankets become a thing?
Chemenger · 20/12/2019 16:56

I had to eat half a dozen to make sure they were all wrong.

f00k · 20/12/2019 16:58

They look bloody good though @Chemenger. I'd have to eat half a dozen just to be sure too.

ilovepixie · 20/12/2019 17:13

We have always had them. I'm 51 but they were called cocktail sausages wrapped in bacon!
